From the Polk e-News:

iPod Beats Out Beer In Campus Poll

TWICE reports that in a recent survey of college students, the majority consider their iPod the most “in” thing in their lives. It’s even more important than beer. The Student Monitor, which tracks college undergraduate trends, found 73 percent of the 1,200 students polled said iPods were "in." Beer came in second place at 71 percent.

College days sure have changed since I was there. Girls, Beer....

Thats it. I'm going back to grad school. Time to buck this trend.

Sid, I'll buy you a beer when you are of age.

Wait until you have a niece, nephew or whatever (you know the little guys) ask you one day, "Uncle Sid, Mommy says you're smart so can you help me with this."

Boy, do I feel old :( . My generation grew up on the original Walkman and it sure as hell didn't rank higher than chicks or beer..

iPods, they've got to be this generations biggest rip-off. $200+ for a small recording device.

Actually the good ones go for about $300 and they are playback devices, not recording devices.

If it's not an IPOD,it's a cell phone glued to their ears all day.Wait 10 yrs
when this whole generation has hearing loss at young ages. Then some one will win a law suit that it was Apple's fault for their hearing loss and that will be that. Then the tech guys come up with some new device and the craze
repeats.Never ending, the circle of greed.

    Are you kidding me?

I can put all of my 400 cds on a device that is smaller than an Altoids box..

Now I can actually listen to all of the songs I have instead of trying to find cds that I forgot I had..

by the way...I'm 36 and already have hearing loss because of the Motley Crue's of the world back in the late 80's and early 90's...the Ipod isn't going to make it worse

I think this is perfectly reasonable. Not every person in college drinks beer. 71% sounds like a pretty accurate number. There were plenty of groups who didn't drink - uber-healthy folk, nerds, scared freshman. I could easily see that comprising 29% of the student population. On the other hand, nearly everyone can enjoy SOME type of music.

The quote is phrased very poorly though. Obviously this has nothing to do with the MOST important thing, just what is "in". Because if 73% found the iPod the MOST important, then there's no way 71% found BEER the most important... there's only 27% left! The people who think beer is "in" obviously think the iPod is "in" as well, and could vote for both, wtih no preference given to either.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'm surprised cell phones weren't in the top 2. It's a wonder the younger generation can do anything now days, let alone drink beer, what with one arm disabled with either the ipod or phone. They've become a one-armed generation.
Common courtesies are out the window too.......like turn signals....sorry, only got one arm ..... courteous chat , pleases and thank yous.....too preoccupied to utter them. Freakin' pathetic if you ask me. They seem to be more interested in talking to someone who isn't there than the people around them. What's up with that?
