Found this over at The Spot. Have no source for the info, but I imagine we might see something tomorrow, if it is legit.

Tokyo - The nine major CE companies that have jointly established specifications for Blu-ray Disc will announce those specs on June 14.

The companies, which are called the 'Blu-ray Disc Founders,' according to the release, include Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Thomson Multimedia. Blu-ray Disc is a next generation, large capacity, optical video-recording format for HDTV.

By announcing the specification in June the group wants to give companies a period to study the specifications prior to the start of licensing, which is scheduled for the end of June.

As mentioned in the group’s February press conference Blu-ray Disc enables recording, rewriting and playback of up to 27 gigabytes of data on a single-sided single-layer disc that is the same size as standard CDs and DVDs. A Blu-ray disc will record over 2 hours of digital high-definition video and more than 13 hours of standard TV broadcasts.

In addition the system will enable the recording of high-definition images from digital video cameras, while the random access capabilities of the disc will simplify and add greater flexibility to video editing.

After reading this, I Googled Blu Ray Disc Press Conference & found a Sony press release that is basically the same as this.

I expect that new machines will be required to play this. I hope that the industry figures out that they should put alternate formats on the discs so that people with older machines can play them. I am probably going to fork over for an SACD machine because I can play hybrid discs on my car player & boombox. But I'm not going to buy any DVD-A discs because you can only play them on a DVD or DVD-A machine, depending on whether or not they also have a 96/24 PCM 2-ch mix, too. Anyway, I'm not going to go any farther with buying into the format wars, except for the SACD.

Am I right in supposing that new machines will be required?

Yea, it will be a new player because they are using a blue laser for the data.

I think most of the SACDs are just SACD, not Hybrid, but I could be smoking crack.

I've heard that the these new blu-ray dvds will also contain a red-laser so they will be backwards compatable with our old DVDs. Old DVDs, I cannot believe I am saying that. There so new, yet in a few years, with HD-DVD, they will be old.

Oh well, I laugh in the face of HD-VHS, a go no where format.
