Need center channel speaker help, advice !!
As noted, I have some of the older Polk speakers; RT-55's,RT-35's,FX-500i's and a CS-400i center spkr.(also a CS-300 currently used in the back).
However,I'm finally going to get rid of my old 32" CRT and buy a new 40" LCD HDTV.
My problem is that the CS-400i is a monster of a center channel speaker,8 5/8" H., and most shelves directly below the TV on the majority of the stands I've found are about 7 1/2" H, 8" at most.
I've hardly been able to find any stands that will accomodate the CS-400i on the shelf directly below the TV.(any suggestions?)
One alternative is to go ahead and buy a new center channel speaker that's voiced matched to my existing speakers and would fit below the TV(which newer Polk speaker would match my speakers?)
I notice that the newer Polk center channel speakers come with kickstands.
"The CSi5 features a unique Adjustable Kickstand for secure balance on today's shallow-depth TVs and monitors".
Are these 'kickstands' stable enough to balance a speaker such as the CSi5(which is no lightweight) atop todays plasma and LCD TV's that are barely over 4" thick?
Is there a 'best' way of positioning center channel speakers with todays thinner plasma and LCD TV's?
Any replies, suggestions, solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
brentski

Oh man I know the feeling! I also have a cs400i and you are not kidding when you say its a monster. Same thing happened to me, I ordered a new 61" tv (should be getting it in 2 days) and started looking for tv stands, found a few that me and my wife like and when we were about to pull the trigger I remember..oh crap that monster. I had to do a lot of research and let me tell you, you cannot find shelves with 9" inches of clearance.
Then I started looking at replacing the center channel and happen to go by the local Best Buy and there it was the same tv that I ordered on top of this tv stand with huge shelve space! Its from Bush industries model VS74962, I know is way bigger than what you are looking for (58" wide) but for $299 it might be something to consider.
Hope this helps. -
I used a set of L brackets to mount the center over the TV.
Good speaker stores have these brackets that have adjustable arm lengths and can hold 30 lbs or so. Even Lowes and the likes have shelf bracket 'L's. I dint want mine touching the TV adding vibrations it didnt need.
Also you wont get a new center to match Timbre on the older speakers. Thats not true about the match shown in the education section of the site. I had it the other way and wanted to save a few bucks, new speakers older center.Didnt even come close, I could hear the difference and my hearing isnt that good so I ran a phantom center till I got the newer center!! -
The kickstand is located at the back of the CSi5 and as such is designed for deep TVs such as tubes. I have the CSi5 and of all my Polk speakers it's my favorite. Mine's on a shelf below my plasma.Multichannel Music:
