Monitor 60 or 70?

About to pull the trigger on one of these to go with my CS1 and Monitor 40, but dont really know which is the better. I CAN and HAVE auditioned the 50's and 70's at Circuit City but haven't heard the 60's. Polk's recommended systems they have the 60's and not the 70's. The 60's cost $559.98 on Crutchfield and the 70's cost 799.98 at Circuit City. I'm just wondering though what makes the 70's better than the 60's? I'm using these 50/50 for movies and music. Can somebody help me make up my mind?

There is no wrong choice in this scenario.

The 70's aren't neccesarily 'better' - they will play a little deeper, a little louder, a little more efficiently than the 60's - but the tonal signature is consistent throughout the line.

Me? I wait for Tweeter to put the T90E (Euro version of the Monitor 60) on sale at $350/pair, and spend my savings buying (or upgrading) my subwoofer situation.

Welcome to the boards, and thanks for choosing Polk Audio!

    Cheers,

I highly recommend the 70s, as I have them. As Russman said you really can't go wrong. I auditioned the 40s, 50s, and the 70s so I couldn't tell you about the 60s but they are a great line of speaker. As you can see I have the monitor series all around and it creates amazing surround imaging since they are all voice-matched. I found the 70s to have great presence. I recently finished calibrating my system and I literally get goosebumps when I sit back and listen to my music. Even though they are large speakers with fairly good bass response I found that between 50-60hz they begin to roll off so I calibrated my SVS to come in at that point and have established what I find to be a great flat response. Two thumbs way up for the 70s!

Well see, I was wondering if I should go ahead and get the 70 fronts, that way I can put my 40's for surrounds and get rid of those Paradigm Cinema ADP's? Or go ahead and upgrade my center from the cs1 to the cs2? But then again I have a velodyne vrp1200, should I go ahead and get rid of it and get a better sub? What really should I do first?

The center is very important in 5.1 playback. Your Velodyne VRP1200 will do just fine as far as filling in the LFE until you decide to upgrade and really pressurize the room and get some true sub sonic rumble. :D It is really up to you what you want to do first. If you listen to a fair amount of music I would recommend replacing your mains first, then center next, and last but most certainly not the least your sub. The 70s will give you great stereo imaging and they will also make the effects in movies significantly more impactful. Just to let you know my 40s as my rears sound absolutely phenominal.

It may be hard to do, but find some place to listen to the 60s and 70s side by side. If you cant, buy them both and compare in your real world anyway. Take back the pair you don't want. There's probably nowhere better than your listening spot to make a choice. If you have a HH Gregg anywhere close, they will deal on the 60s. Just ask them for their best price and you can usually get like 20% off anything in the store. I have the 60s and love them. Got a good deal on them as well $480 with tax for the pair. Got my TV there for 27% off list price. Good luck:)

Here is another vote for the 70's, then Cs2 then sub. I have the 70's and they ROCK! I recall auditioning them up against the 60's and found that the 70's delivered a fuller image and better bass. They were out of stock at circuit city so I bought the floor models for $279.00 each :D

Also, if you haven't done so already, consider getting an Rti8 for the fronts. There was a recent thread comparing the Monitor 70 vs. Rti8.

    70's for music
    60's for HT

(if 50/50, edge to the 60's with a decent sub)
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
