The cable companies are dooming cablecard to obsolecence, by their lack of support. They'd rather rent you the box for more money than the card, and hope you order VOD/PPV with it. Locally Mediacom is telling customers the cards are backordered, telling some they will wait as much as six months to get one. Then when they do get it, their idiot installers can't get it work. As a result of this issue across the country, most CE companies are not including a cablecard slot on new models, so you won't even have the option.

+1 They do want you renting their box far more than using a cablecard although it was offered to me and to be honest, that was the first time I heard about one. I had questions regarding getting another box, and in the end ended up purchasing my own HD/DVR motorola box for 100 bucks used on craigslist and it works perfectly fine in my bedroom. Surprised the lady was honest with me and confirmed I can go out of my way to purchase one because I called her out on the expense it'd cost me renting one. They just emphasized that I wouldn't get any technical service/etc regarding that single box I purchased, just had to get it registered and well everything works fine, no extra monthly fee for using my own box or anything.
