I blew my Fxi5's

Well I'm at it again......while searching for a "hum" coming from my Fxi5's, I managed to send them some sort of distortion. Now the sound is crackled and has static. I tried them with a different amp, so it's not the amp.

Does Polk sell the drivers seperately? I bought them off someone who bought them new and sold them to me in an unopened box. Polk states that the warranty is not transferable, so I'm out of luck there.

Joe (completely dissapointed)

What amp did you have them hooked too? How much juice where they getting? I'm planning on FXi5's and possibly a 200 watt B&K and don't want to go overboard on them...

Hope you can get yours fixed BTW!

It was a Phase Linear 400. But it wasn't the fault of the amp, the speakers could handle the power, they just don't like getting unplugged and plugged while the system is on. I f'd up.

That is a kick in the you know where Joe. On a funnier note, listen to Bill Engvall's "Here's Your Sign" about the guy changing a fanbelt while the car is running. Did you contact Polk re: the driver?

I sent Polk an e-mail because I figure they must be closed for the weekend. I'll phone them on Monday. ( I did that so I can feel better for having taken a step towards repairing them).

Is there a possibility that some other circuitry inside the speaker is damaged (crossovers)? I'd hate to order new drivers and not resolve the problem.

It may have been a case of laziness on my part. As you can see, I've gone beyond what is reasonable with "separates" (it almost became a "mission" to build as "separate" a system as possible). Therefore, when I wanted to troubleshoot a hissing sound, I kept eliminating component after component, and there was no problem until I reached the pre-amp.

GOOD NEWS!!! My Fxi's are NOT blown after all. I took them off the wall and started checking if it was the drivers or crossovers but they all worked fine. Ran some more tests with the system......rewired it to run from pre-amp to amp to Fxi's and they sounded fine. Now I'm suspecting I blew the surround channel on the Carver surround sound processor.

Yeah, I confirmed it....if I run the sound through the Carver, the Fxi's sound crappy and cut in and out where it didn't do that before the "accident". Oh well, looks like I'll have to go shopping for something.

The Joe Paraski method of upgrading........when you're tired of it; blow it up and then you can go shopping :D:p <JK> of course. That's a bummer; you've sure had a few issues with your equipment. Maybe you'll find soemthing that works even better.

Yes, I plan on getting a pre/pro when I get back from China. I'll be counting on recommendations from Club Polk members. I'll admit that I bought a lot of stuff I didn't need....that's all part of learning I guess, luckily this stuff was mostly cheap, dollarwise, on e-bay. I didn't know pre/pro's existed, I thought ALL these units were amplified. I've learned a lot in my short time here.
