I notice that most people run a seperate cd player. Is there any reason for this or is it just better sound?

Better sound......make that the possibility of much better sound is the reason.

yes, then you can smoke your pipe and make small gurnting approval noises, I can recommend several pipes and brands of tobacco for you.

In a nutshell, Hi-Fi is about getting the purest signal from the software to the speaker, specialization is generally held as one of the key's for the system.

In the 2-channel, music world, a separate CD player is a necessity. I'm sure a combo unit from MF or Arcam wouldn't make for a bad setup, but speaking in general, you don't want to rely on a CD changer, DVD player, or CD player/preamp combo as your main source. You can do a lot better in quality (both build and sound quality) going with a separate, stand alone unit.
