My cousin is in the market for a new 42" Hi-Def TV, but like audio, doesn't know anything about the technology. From what I've read in forums, and have seen in Circuit City demo rooms (which mean nada I know) I told him that I prefer the DLP technology.

Am I wrong here? And also, his budget isn't exactly virgin-tight, but it's not anything goes either. Is 1080p worth the extra cash?

I'm going to Charleston, SC to visit him in 2weeks and help pick something out then, probably at a Circuit City due to price/performance reasons. So far, I've advised him on Samsung and Phillips, but don't really know for sure.

When you say LCD are you talking about a rear-projection or direct view?

1080p is certainly worth the extra when it comes to big screens but I don't know if it makes that much difference with 42". Depends on the viewing distance of course but he needs to see them himself and make a decision based on how it looks to him. Discovery HD is a good channel to switch to when comparing TV's (if that's an option in a store).

If he ends up with Samsung, nothing wrong there. If you were to make a bllind buy without seeing TV's first, that's what I would recommend as they are very good sets and IMO great value too. I ended up purchasing their 1080p HL-R DLP and I am very happy with it. It took me a long time to jump into HD but now I hardly watch SD anymore.

LCD VS. DLP, I do prefer DLP but both have weaknesses. DLP weaknesses just bother me less.

Compare prices online (make sure it's an authorized dealer). That should give you an idea if the local dealer has good pricing. If not, you can always try to get him to lower his based on the internet pricing... I ended up purchasing mine online since there was a $1500 difference.

i see that the samsung HL-P5085W pedestal design is available for around $1500. I'll point this one out to him. He doesn't have a 5.1 setup nor is he interested. he's just looking for a good HDTV.

1080p is worth it just so he will have no need to upgrade for awhile. Also, from what I have seen, LCDs and DLPs are both incredible, it would be impossible for me to pick one blindly. I doubt you can go wrong with either.

As for DLP, I must reccomend Mitsubishi sets, they are great
For LCD, the sony's I have seen are nice but I do not remember if they were projection or not.
