In rememberance of those who lost their lives on D-Day 62 years ago today, and all throughout WW2. God bless all of them for doing the most noble thing a person can do, which is fighting for what you believe in.

Here's the battle plan, gives me the chills looking at it. My grandfather was a tailgunner and still has shrapnel in him.

Pretty much the best representation there has been on film of that war.

I thought the beach landing scene in "Saving Private Ryan" was incredibly done.

If any of you have Encore, check out the 60's tv series "Combat", the longest running tv series about WWII. It's a very good show. The earlier episodes had a little too much comic relief with the character Braddock, but as the show progressed, it got better and better. Check it out if you can.

I'll be buying the whole box set of "BoB", soon.

Amen! The pictures I've seen of the Allied cemetery near the beaches is very sobering.

Every other year when my students study WWII they get the opportunity to hear from WWII vets, one of which landed about midday. he goes to great lengths to explain the organized chaos of the day. But what is most interesting is how he states that the smell is what has stuck with him the most 62 years later.

My father, RIP, was a field medic during the landing at Omaha beach - he refused to watch Saving Private Ryan because he was terrified it would bring back vivd meories of a time he did not want to recall. He was also in the field hsopital when gen Patton slapped the solder ofr being shell shocked. He had to give testimony before a military tribunal that was considering demoting/court martialing Gen. Patton. My father's response to them was "if you demote Gen Patton you will have slapped all those poor **** who died while defending our country - Gen Patton is our leader, not DDE".

My grandfather was killed a day after parachuting in, about episode 3 of Band of Brothers if I remember right. SPR was really hard to watch. For some reason BoB, probably due to length, paints such a vivid picture of the day to day experience they went through.

I also have to mention my grandfather received a Bronze Star for bravery, plus his Purple Heart. He also missed my mother being born.

My grandfather always gets aggrivated with all of the WWII movies like Saving Private Ryan because he doesn't think enough attention is paid to the Pacific theater, where he was :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Flags of our Fathers - Clint Eastwood

2 part movie coming out later this year. It's the #1 movie I am looking forward to this year, and one I will probably trek to the theater to see.

I had family there also, Two of my uncles were shot down and one became POW for several months toward the end.
He would not talk about it and if he thought about it to hard he would kinda glass over and get lost in thought.
He would never buy anything from Germany if he could help it.

Thanks for starting the thread Demi.

My grandfather was a submariner in the Pacific from '39 - '45. I never got to hear too many stories as he passed away when I was 8. I do remember him telling one about being depth-charged off the coast of Japan for 8 hours straight. I think he was a diesel mechanic on the sub, but am not too sure.
