Regarding jobs...

Since there seems to be such a popularity with job threads these last few days, I thought I'd follow along the same lines. Helpful, I know.
For the past 4 months, I've been jobless in the real sense of the word. I've only done handyman jobs, odds here, ends there. Enough to get by, but we are what you call, scraping bottom. It seemed that the job market just dried up on me, even when I applied for everything from a Wally World greeter, to an Office Filer. I sent out over 150 applications one week, with zero responses. Overall, just not cool.
Suddenly I had three job interviews in one week. One was with Lowe's as a management position, one with a local Custom Home Inspections company, and the third a logistic specialist position for a warehouse. When it rains, it pours eh?
I am currently leaning towards the Lowe's position, and was wondering if anyone had any insight into this company. I've had a few friends who have worked for them, and they have nothing but raves of good praise. The Owner of the store, I interviewed with her first. She seemed to really like me, and in the first interview, she said that there was a position opening in the next week (This was 3 weeks ago, and NOT the position she had requested the interview for) for management and asked if I wanted that job? I said, Yes. She said she'd call me back after it was posted inside for one week. I got a call 6/1 and came back in for a second interview for the position she had mentioned. I have my third and final interview tomorrow with the store manager. I feel that the boss lady already said hire me, and I'm just going through the motions now. But I could be wrong
Anyways, anyone have any personal experience or know of anyone that has experience with Lowe's career wise?
Though it won't be the most money position outta the three I interviewed with, I think it has the most upward potential! (If the boss lady likes ya, promotions could be within reach fairly quickly huh?:D) I asked what the starting hourly pay would be (This is the last position in the company that is hourly and not salaried) and I was told that since I have such a wide experience with all area's of their company, my pay would be negotiable above what is normally paid. But when asked for a specific dollar amount, they declined to answer at this point. Interesting.
Regardless, I'm excited to possibly land a secure position again, and get back to working in the real world!!!

I certainly hope it pulls through for you. A solid job with a lot of upward growth possibilities would be nice.George Grand wrote: »

Good luck on Lowes. I think I know a guy that is a manager at the SMP location. A home inspector would be a great job, high pay with low hours, but probably only if you work for yourself.
What kind of handy stuff can you do? If you're scraping for cash, I have some small projects. ie laying some floor tile in a very small bathroom, restaining part of my deck, etc. -

SMP is the one that I'm in queue for right now. How does he like it there? If i land it, I'm sure I'll meet him.
The Home Inspector position would be nice, but it wouldn't really have any upward growth potential. And I think that after doing it for a few years, one would get burned out pretty quickly. But you are right, very high pay, and only working like 6 hours a day.
Handy stuff, well actually, I set lots of tile and stone, and even have a little business on the side for that. I can stain decks with the best of 'em I've got a nice power washer, if your deck needed to be cleaned up first too! PM me if you are interested.

best of luck with the job hope all works well

Nightly, from personal experience, you will love Lowes. It's a stressful, and challenging job but the benefits are limitless. They're one of the fastest growing companies in the country, and their stock split at least twice in the last 5years. The company made two of my uncles millionaires by the time they retired.
Good luck. -

Now that's what I'm talking about Ya, the manager said something about the stock splitting twice in the past few years, and predicted to split again in the not too distant future. That would be pretty sweet, plus they buy you stock at a 15% discount. Not a bad deal at all, and their future seems a lot more secure than HD.
Thanks for the support, let's hope I land the position!!! I'll know tomorrow which way it's heading.Honoured to be, an original SOPA founding member

There's 2 of them that I have seen going up here locally, so they're definitely growing. I never shopped there as we haven't had one in our area.
Good luck, just have a kick **** attitude and things will start working really well for you. There's lots of potential here for you. -
Good luck MrNightly! Try to find out during your interview how long people have been with the company. You can tell a lot about a company by how long the people have been there and how they like their jobs. How old are the people in responsible positions? As you interviewers how long they been there? Where did they start? What are the growth opportunities? How are people evaluated for promotions? These questions should give you some feeling of how well the company is organized and how they treat their people.Carl

We have a Lowes and a Home Depot located directly across from each other.
The Lowes lot is usually full, the HD is mostly empty.
From a shopping perspective, Lowes appears to offer more product, better organized, and if you have to get help, you have a decent chance of talking to someone who knows something.
Not the same experience with HD.
If you need references, feel free to list the users on Club Polk for references.
I have a couple of cat pictures I've been holding in reserve that will definitely seal the deal on your interviews !Sal Palooza -

Very generous offer... I may have to take you up on it sooner or later
Well, the last interview is complete. Just met the Store Manager and answered his questions and all that jazz. Pretty straight forward. Again, he wouldn't get pinned down on a money amount. He said that all three of the interviewers will review me and then settle on a $ amount. When asked if it would be negotiable, he smiled and said, yes of course. He also mentioned that their salaries were very competitive, so we shall see. I was told possibly Friday, or Monday / Tuesday I'd hear back with the offer... if there was an offer of course.
So, here's to keeping the fingers crossed. Let's hope that I get that offer, and it's competitive. Maybe I'll be employed full time again come next week eh?Honoured to be, an original SOPA founding member

If not, I've got plenty of various size projects, carpet, sheetrock, exterior wood rot (oh the joys of home ownership). -
Well, that's good news so far. I'll keep you on my prayer list!George Grand wrote: »

Well, it will work for now that's for sure It will also be flexible enough to let me finish my degree, and then we'll see what happens. I've always enjoyed the management positions, and this seems to have a ton of up-ward potential. Only time will tell, that is for sure.

Well, I accepted the position at Lowe's. I'll be managing the Tools and Hardware departments. Nothing too fancy, but it's a great start for me! I'm pretty happy.
I start 6/21. They really have outstanding benefits, and excellent opportunities to grow and move up in the company.
Glad to finally get back up and running... it's been too long.
Just figured I'd update the crowds. It's never easy having this many fans, all clamoring for attention....Honoured to be, an original SOPA founding member

Congrats, Mr. Nightly! I have moved all my biz from HD to Lowes. They are just a better store and environment for me and the family. Besides, parking lot seems to be a lot more organized and clean, compared to HD.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.
