Balanced and Unbalanced

Hi Polkees,
Can anyone tell me what the difference between balanced and unbalanced inputs on an amplifier is and what it means. I am planning on buying a couple of 2 channel and 3 channel amps from Rotel and keep seeing these inputs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I am going to use the preouts on my Sony ES receiver until I get a pre/pro next year hopefully, will this receiver work ok with the Rotels when I get them. Thanks PEPI

Rotel has balanced outs???
Well, if they do their amps aren't truely balanced, so don't worry about it.Political Correctness'.........defined

Balanced is a 3 pin XLR connector that you use in lieu of an RCA jack. Balanced connectors (XLR) are superior in noise rejection. For example, If you had a radio station tower nearby and you heard the radio station through your speakers while playing other sources (i.e. tuntable, TV, etc) you would want to use XLR balanced connectors.
This situation happened to me and I believe its the only way to go. If you have a pronounced hiss in your sysgtem, balanced connectors generally would eliminate this as well.
Hope this helps. -
I owned a 1080 and it had both balanced and unbalanced. The 1095 does as well and check out the Rotel web site for info on all their amps. Are they truly balanced? Good question.
