I got it! :) My mini Velodyne DPS-10 review

Well, I finally jumped ship and bought the Velodyne DPS-10. I narrowed it down to the Infinity PS12 or the DPS-10 and the DPS-10 won hands down. The Infinity just didnt have the tightness the Velodyne did.

So I brought the sub home, disconnected my little Yamaha SW010 8" and hooked this bad boy up. Fired up the pod-race scene from SW Episode I was like..hmm..okay..something is not right here. I began my tweaking and testing and set it to just how I liked it. I put in King Kong and my God...I was blown away. I literally felt my chest cavity begining to crush when Kong was dueling out with the T-Rex. About 10 minutes after that scene, my mouth was still open out of amazement. The one thing however, is that I think I need to adjust the LFE level on my reciever. The range is -20 to 0 dB; so I'm not sure which setting I should use. I am keeping the low-pass crossover a 40 Hz I believe.

Overall, a phenomonal subwoofer. I would buy it all over again.

You might want to consider sending slightly higher frequencys to the sub, i think most people here would agree that about 80hz is a good cutoff for your LFE.

Congrats on your new sub! Any pics?

+1 on the higher setting. 80 Hz is th THX spec. Go lower for music. Play with the crossover setting to syit your ears. Congrats!

Hmm, I have somewhat of a n00by question - but how do I go about sending higher frequencies to my sub? Would it be a setting on my reciever and if so what would it be called? Or that knob on the back of the sub with the word "Direct" on one end?:( I apologize, I am still an apprentice to all this..hehe. If what I saw was correct, then I'm pretty sure it was at 40hz.

The reciever i own is a YHT-5830 - it's a pretty good reciever, it was from a HTIB, but I had to get rid of those God awful plastic speakers :(.

And yes, I will definitely be posting some pictures, probably tonight sometime of my whole system. And do you mean +1 on the subwoofer "level"? The LFE settings on the reciever can only go from -20 to 0, no + number's :(.

But man, before writing this...I tested out the dinosaur rampage from King Kong (the new 2005 movie), and my God...I swear I was going to have a heart attack. I felt my chest cavity almost caving in. Bear in mind, I was jumping from a Yamaha YSW-1011 to this beast...so i'm new to bass like this. hehe.

This is to answer Home Theatre's questions:

I'm not quite sure how big my room is - only because it is so unevenly shaped, and since I only have a limited amount of room to put my speakers I really never bothered measuring my room. But I will be posting pictures up late tonight, so maybe you could get an idea.

I had purchased the sub at Circuit City for $449.00

I am using the subwoofer cable that came with my Yamaha sub (HTIB), but I may buy a new cable if convinced. I am using 16-guage Acoustic Reasearch for the rest of my system.

Congrats! This sub sounds impressive and I recently considered gettin' one too, but went for the Mirage S12. I'll post a review after it arrives.

Set the crossover in your receiver setup menus (@80 or 90hz). Set your speakers to small. One the back of the sub turn the crossover knob all the way up. The manual should tell you this. This allows the receiver to handle the crossover (a good thing). You're going to be happier when you get this done. The DPS 10 is a good sub...enjoy.

I like 80hz crossover in the reciever, 80hz crossover setting on the sub, but that's just me. This whole "don't use two crossover" stuff has been blown way outta proportion.

I have a Polk CS1 for my center, Polk Monitor 50s' for my fronts and Advent's for my rears - but they aren't hooked up because my significant other would not allow me to drill holes :(.

    Hey Ron -

When you say crossover knob, is that the one that has the word "Direct" on one end, and something else (I forgot) on the other? I have it set all the way to Direct. All my speakers are set to Small (Center/Fronts).

IIRC Direct bypasses the subs crossover...you might want to verify in the manual, but I think you're good to go. You want the sub to handle LFE and bass from ~ 20hz to crossover.
