I have DirecTV and now a HD television. I heard some negatives on this unit, but see that some members here use this receiver.

I get HD locals thru DirectTV, eventhough I also have OTA antenna. It works great, and most pixelation issues were caused by the stations.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Q isn't DirecTV changing to format of HD locals? From Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 so the HR10 will not work with DirecTV locals any-longer?

They are, but rumor was also spreading that DTV will send a replacement unit/upgrade to owners. I'll wait until the dust settled, and beside, it be a while before the unit will actually become obsolete. The new standard will be phased in slowly, not overnight.

For the upgrade do you have to buy the unit from DTV?

don't know. call CS and see what they say. I assume that would be the case, I got mine for $200 and chump change, after rebate, back in August 05. So, even if it becomes a door stop, I have a bunch of Sopranos, Rome, on it so it's already pay itself.

Well OK here's my side, DTV would charge me $499 for least unit / $749 I would own it. Crutchfield would charge me $499 own it great CS so do I deal with them or DTV. DTV told me they didn't know the swap deal would be so I question why I would pay $499 when you may say the new box would be another $300? I didn't get a response and she / DTV was happy to end call with me. I an existing DTV customer will not get any rebates so what it is it is.

I think all the carriers pretty much suck now including Direct. I have Direct and just get my local channel's in SD, I really dont care, I use the East Coast High Def feeds out of NY, cant you buy those anymore? Cant get any local OTA HD signal wear I live.

"Love" is a strong word. I have DTV for the past 6 years. I was with Charter Commn. cable prior to that for 7 years. Strictly from system "up time" DTV won hands down. HR10-250 is low maintenance, so it gets my vote, and works great for my need. :)

This is well a documented issue with HR10-250, but I am not sure I read the resolution for it, yet: connecting it using optical connection to the preamp/receiver cause intermittent connection problem, inconsistent, but is an issue. I am trying to pipe XM radio (which comes free with DirecTV) but having this problem. Thanks, folks!

XM over DirecTV sucks vs. Polk's XM Tuna IMHO. I have both.

Other then that I'm enjoying my HR10-250 ;)

Thank you, Steve...interesting you said that, I've been on the high-rez regular FM stations all this time ;) and thought about using the free XM just to test it out. How's the quality? comparable to RBCD? thanks.

I liked owning my own gear. Now you have to lease all there units. Works great but the menu system and remote suck compaired to my HD Samsung reciever. Hd locals are awesome and loving the foolsball games this year!!!!

Comparable to RBCD's more or less, that all depends what you listen to. Rock is the worse IMHO.

BTW what are High-rez regular FM stations?

I was kidding, it's regular run-off-the-mill broadcast stations, complete with 5 minutes airtime of talks and ads, for every other song played.

Only bad thing in my opionion is that the guide on the 10- 250 is very slow, that being said the new DirecTV hd dvrs are way better and not Tivo. Being an installer I hate Tivo its a big pain in the A$$ and it makes the most anoying sounds, you can disable them but the new dvrs should be way better

I have 2 HR10-250s. They are universally accepted as the very best DVR product that has ever existed. That doesn't mean that they're great, but just the best that there is.

They do everything I want them to pretty much wonderfully. The only drawback is that they get incrementally slower as time goes by. Button pushes on the remotes take longer for a response. They have a "clear all" function that fixes the problem, but you lose all of your program scheduling.

I get great OTA reception and won't be bothering to buy the new unit as the PQ coming from the satellites is not as good as that of the OTA broadcasts. Additionally, the series 3 units do not support OTA even though they have tuners in them!

Why did TiVo not come out with a standalone unit HD recorder, they seem to have all the parts?

Six people think that Satellite sucks.
Let me guess cable users. Just interested in why? I went with Satellite over ten years a ago. It was half the price of cable. I was interested because i had a hometheater and the picture & sound quality of cable was a J.O.K.E.
Ten years ago the upgrade from cable to satellite was jawdropping - a real slap in the face of local cable companys. They asked why I switched and I laughed and hung up the phone. Ya, the service was that bad. I have never looked back. I have saved about $500 on tv guides (it was small magazine that you bought on a weekly bases to let you know what was coming on the tv)alone.;)
Now, over ten years later cable finally catches up - they are now "digital".
Are these six people new to the cable tv world or did i miss something in the last ten years?

P.S. There was nothing for DTV kicks A$$ so i did not vote..................

Once you receive the new software load, and reboot the system the guide is as fast as the R15's guide. It is even fast when changing priority in the season passes. If you have ever tried to change a program in your season pass to a higher priority it used to take a painfully long time. Haven't had issue since the software upgrade.

Also if you are looking into getting the new HR20, take a look at this thread http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44687 I have had issues with the new box.
