Well heres the deal. I want to install audio systems in peoples homes. I can not find any info on starting up. I live in northern mi. and I do not know what type of liscence, or certifications I need. I'm planing on coming up witha buisness name and slaping some logos on my asrto van with my phone number just to see how many calls I get(i work in a signshop/design company) so cost would be minimal for the advertising. I would start out working on weekends and off days. I would be doing work in finished homes, and during construction. I've got a few friends that are builders/contractors so getting in the loop would not be a problem(i've wired their home and car audio/video systems. I just don't now what I need to do it legealy or to find any info. I've tryed googleing, and michigan.gov, and a few other places but zip, zero, nada. Any help would be awesome
Thanks all,
dude

Did you research the technical schools in your area for that kind of job?

I think that there is a poster in here that has started the same sort of business within the last year or so but I don't remember who. When he posts there is a link to his company's website. Maybe someone else will remember who the poster is. Go for it, good luck.Polk RTi 8's

Well I started my first install yesterday, I got all of the speakerwire ran. 5 sets in all, went pretty quick. It was for a friend of mine who is a contractor. He decided that he wanted to use his yamaha receiver to run it all, and use bookshelf speaker through out. I still have to put in the boxes, get and install the terminal wall plates, and the impeadance matching speaker switchbox. The first quote was $1700 for electronics, and speakers, all inwall, and four room, four source control(russound cas44 with kp4 keypads) dual tuner, 400disc cd changer, and his 56" big screen as sources. But he decided he did not want to go that technical as I would be over showing him how to use it regularly. Second job looks like It might be for his uncle's house. also have two other side jobs coming up for auto installs(GGGRRRRRR wanted to get away from cars). The first of the two is an xm unit in a new ford f-250, and the other is a full system(4x5.25" coax, acouple amps and 2 10's) in a semi. Oh well guess I'll take what I can get for now.

I noticed this thread a while back, but didn't get a chance to say anything because we had a baby shortly after and I forgot about it.
Basically, I went through the same steps you did. I originally did car audio installations, but figured out I like the home audio side better.
Also, within the last 3-4 years, I did home theater installs for friends and relatives, receiving little financial compenstation.
Last fall, I decided to make a go at this as a full business(along with teaching), and got set up with several distributors to be able to sell products and intall them.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. You can PM me or email through the forum or my website, and I will help as much as I can.Tschüss
