Speaker suggestion

I am starting into recording and mixing for a local band. What Polk speakers do you folks recommend for a "near-field" monitor type of speaker?

I have a pair of SDA SRS 1.2's bought new back in the eighties and will be using those as a pass/fail type of listen. But, those speakers are not at the same location as the mixing area. In my opinion, after many years of owning Polk Audio speakers in the home and vehicles, Polk spaekers do not add coloration to the recorded sound. So, having said that, would not have a good pair of Polks used for mixing ultimately equate to a good sound on many home audio set-ups? Polk speakers or not?

See, the sales folks at several recording gear companies all promote near-field monitors - Mackies, ADAM, M-Audio, Tannoy, etc. And I have listened to several. Maybe it is my ears have gotton used to the 1.2's as THE sound standard, but I almost believe the near-field concept is more hype than truth-in-sound. What do you all think?
