More to LP's than just another source...

I did some record shopping over the weekend and something hit me really hard as I'm playing a few of the lp's I found. I now like a LOT of music which I would have never bought on CD! As a matter of fact, a lot of this stuff would not be good at all on CD. This is much more than I anticipated when I purchased a turntable.

I'm thinking the most important aspect of a turntable today is the variety of tunes which I would have never experienced given CD alone. When you have a never ending selection of 75 cent mint lp's to choose from the hardest decision to make is which one to play first. Sure, some of it is junk but given some of the more recent CD artists I've had...

So, a few new purchases include two very high quality jazz style lp's by spyro gyra, a handful of show tunes, an aldo nova lp (great guitar), a 22 hit compilation from brenda lee, a few boxes of clasical, some old (but mint) 70's pop, an lp full of congo players, a big band featuring trombones, several popular big band lps and a stack of old victrola records for my wind up victrola. All in all, 39 lp's for $31.

The real problem though is the **** showtune records. (**** is an appropriate descriptor in this instance so no complaints please). I'm sure the neighbors wonder what the hell is going on at my place. Last night I played some dr dre gansta rap after listening to a chorus line just to keep things balanced...

You will pay a little bit more for these albums but well worth the price as this might be some of the best music for my taste out on vinyl today.
Music Direct has these in stock.
    1. Naim "Music Collection Volume 1 " outstanding recording with a variety of artists, They just came out with Volume 2 and it should arrive at the O'C home on Tuesday. If anything like Volume 1 it will be a treat.
    2. "Shangri-La" Mark Knoffler at his best , excellent recording and songs that just make you want to keep playing them over & over.Double LP
    3. "So Long So Wrong" Allison Krauss& Union Station One of the most beautifully recorded albums I have ever heard. Her voice will touch the hardest of hearts. This is a must album. 2LP's

LOL! Max, congrats on your find! Cassette tapes too are great to pick up at garage sales, fleas, etc. You can find a lot of good stuff for $0.50 or less. With a decent player and a nice system the sound is very tolerable.

Nice. Discovering new music is a lot of fun. LOL about the gangsta rap:D. So, how many LP's do you actually own? Sounds like you have a massive collection.

I'll keep an eye out for your recommended lps Bill.

I'm up around 2000 lp's. It's important to have a nice selection if you are going to do vinyl. Every time I hit the goodwill or the local antique shops I'm always amazed at how much music I'm walking out with for the price of 2-3 CD's. I still do the ocasional audiophile or new pressing but its hard to pick up one LP for $30 when you know you can find 30+ unknowns for the same cost. All new vinyl does not necessarily sound good either. On average I find a real gem for every 8-10 old lps I pick up and one out of every 3 if new vinyl. By gem I mean it has exceptional recording quality and interesting or quality material.

For awhile I thought I would not recommend vinyl to others because of the lack of material. That is still true if you are stuck on a narrow group of material but if you have wide interests you cannot beat it. (I was limited for a long time because I was stuck on popular rock/metal music). There is a LOT of great music out there!

I have two of these. Only one of them built right now. They are awesome and only cost $60 each on sale. Each cubby hole holds about 90 lp's and about 180 on the top shelf for 900 total. The doors keep the dust out. I'll snap a loaded pic if I get a chance.

I remember when I had all my LP's stored in milk crates. The milk crate manufacturers ended up altering the size of the crates so the lp's wouldn't fit in them anymore because so many people were doing this. I use something similar to what madmax has.

MM, any noticeable bowing of the shelves? Those don't look to bad just wondering about the strength of the shelf/pin combination. I'm gonna need some neat looking cabs or shelving soon (nearing your mark on LP's)

No bowing at all. This is the cool thing about this particular design. No one piece carries enough weight to cause a problem. The full weight is only on the outside and center vertical boards. My main concern was that they would literally break apart somewhere around the bottom because the weight on each one would be about 165 pounds as the whole mess weighs around 500 pounds. What I did to prove it is not a problem was to fully load the shelves then push it back and forth to see if it would break. Now that I see it can withstand all this I will unload the top shelf and use it for CD storage to give a little extra breathing room. Remember, this cabinent was designed primarily for the person who wants to sit a few towels, maybe a few books or something light on each shelf, not for 900 pounds of vinyl...

Dude, that is pretty nifty, for only $60? My wife has informed me that I need to move my record collection from the bookshelves because she doesn't like the way they look. I'll have to look into this Sauder cabinet. Where did you find your's?

I found them several places but I forget where I actually purchased them. You can find in Target and other department stores. They come in oak, black and some other wood colors. I'm very impressed with them for LP's. In general most places have on sale for $69 to $79.

I am a vinylaholic and most of the lps I purchase are $30+

You can't beat the sound quality, no cd compares IMO

I am really a big fan of Japanese pressings, they are definitely top notch!
