Dedicated Music Servers - Part 2

Here is the second part of the "Music Server" thread.

I have a nicely loaded DELL computer with a 17" flat screen monitor. I also have a high quality USB (I believe from MIDI) interface.

Can this be turned into a dedicated music server?

If yes, what else will I need? I suppose given my current setup, the only thing I would need is a good "music server" software. I could obviously load something like iTunes and use the "lossless" format to get high-quality music.

If my aim is to get the best possible sound, sould this setup work for me?

Hey folks - no responses :(

Atleast someone must be using a computer as a source device right? What would be a good software to use if I decide to use the computer as a source device?

    Inquiring minds want to know.
I would like to have a digital library of music so I can just let it play random music.
I am computer illiterate so I have no idea how to make my computer play through my system.
I hope you find some answers.

ok, first off, you need to get a sound card with an optical hookup or an external sound card. There's just too much EMI/RFI going on in a computer case. I used to be able to hear it through the speakers when I'd move my mouse, if I turned up the volume

Also, use EAC to rip the music. When they say exact audio copy, they're not kidding. I got bored at work and did bit comparisons and it's dead on every time.

I do have an external USB sound card which is what I was planning to use.

I've heard a lot about EAC.

as for the player, itunes has some nice tag editing features, but winamp has all the plugins you could ever want- so you can do things like control what the server is playing from a web browser on another computer, etc.
