Outlaw Audio just recently released a software upgrade for their model 990 pre amp. http://ubb.outlawaudio.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/ubb/get_topic/f/34/t/000726.html

I haven't downloaded it yet.. i don't have a laptop. I hope to this weekend if my friend brings his laptop over. I guess it addresses some bass management issues and lip sync display and a few other sound improvements. :D

I'm in the same boat as danger, not having a laptop.I guess i'll have to find a friend with one...there's no way i'm un-pluggin everything from the 990 and moving it closer to the pc,it would be easier to move it.

Hey, how do you like your 990? Thoughts, likes or dislikes?

Yeah, i ididn't want to unplug the pre amp OR move my desktop computer downstairs.. my **** is to lazy for that. ;)

But my friend did come over this weekend and we upgraded the software (firmware) on the Outlaw Audio 990 pre amp.

It's IMHO a very minor upgrade.. but for those people who needed those issuses addressed, i'm sure it's a big deal for them.

    1. lip sync delay display.. well now you can see the lip sync delay display on the front of the 990 pre amp. before you could only see it on your TV (OSD).

    2. bass management issues. I guess this was a big one for a lot of people. As I understand it... you couldn't select something like small fronts and no subwoofer.. or something weird **** like that. well, now you can.

    3. *My fave* DPLII now kicks ****. Before the upgrade DPLII music and movie sucked because for me and others the front soundstage was very poor. Meaning the left to center to right and vice versa was bad sounding. YOu could easily pick out individual front speakers. Now the L to R (and vice versa) panning is very smooth. It sounds so much better and even now.

I think those were the only issues addressed in the upgrade for the Outlaw 990 pre amp. So while not a big update, it did address the DPLII music soundstage issue.

the upgrade was smooth and fairly easy.. takes about 15 to 20 minutes.. with all the steps you have to take from your computer to the 990 USB port.

1 issue has creeped up since i did the upgrade to the firmware... now the auto calibrate won't work correctly.. it keeps telling me I have small fronts and large rears. (yes i know i have a big ****, but that's beside the point here) ha ha

I ran the auto calibrate about 5 times.. and it will not complete becasue of said issue. I have RT800i for fronts.. they are not small damn it. and FX300i for surrounds. they are kind of small. but the pre amp is telling me i have small fronts and large rears. it's crazy.

So i ended up setting it up manually with the SPL meter. SOunds really good now. I had a friend over today who listens to alot of jazz.. he was amazed at how a home theater pre amp could sound so good for 2 ch listening. :D

I remember hearing about this issue back when I upgraded my P-965 (essentially the same as the Outlaw 990 minus some features). If not having the auto-calibrate bums you out, try downloading the upgrade file again and redo the process. Otherwise, leave it as is and rock on!

He already did it the old fashioned way. I wouldn't risk rerunning the upgrade again just for that. If something goes wrong with it he might really have problems.

yeah. i can live with it. if that's the only bug in the software now... not all owners have run into this problem. so mabye, just maybe it's room acoustics. or something weird like that.
