No DD for Wii, Why?

When nintendo said that the wii (then called revolution) was not going to be HD, I was dissapointed but I knew why nintendo was doing it.Thats why 360 owners are paying $400 bucks for a system and $60 per game. But I just read this story from the ign website about DD for wii...

http://revolution.ign.com/articles/709/709823p1.html

and all I got from this is that nintendo was too cheap to add a optical output(like its that expensive). making games dolby digital is not expensive like making them HD, right? the original xbox was DD and the games were the same price as GC and ps2. they even said the wii has the "horsepower" to do DD. Who wants to use pro logic... damn you nintendo!

If they put the wii at $250, it better have an optical out.

I know most of you don't care but for the few that do, just want to let you know

Thta is very surprising. The HD output is even surprising - the GameCube had it, so it can't be THAT expensive to add.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

did the GC have HD output? I remember trying to buy HD cables for my GC when i bought my plasma and not being able to find any. I dont know if the GC actually did... could always be wrong though

If I remember correctly the Game Cube was never able to support HD output.

Nintendo sold the component cables for the GC on their website. For some reason, nintendo wouldn't allow them to be sold anywhere else. Then they took the progressive scan off new gamecubes cause they said no one used it. I wonder why... maybe cause no one knew where to find them. I like Nintendo and they makes great games, but they can be really stupid sometimes.

Who wants to play a game with 1 channel surrounds? How **** is that. (And a very sucky subwoofer track...)

Nintendo has always said it wanted to be more about the games and they said very few people have an HD television with even fewer people hooking up components correctly for the HD signal (I think a survey said something like 70% or so people who owned an HD TV used regular cable/satellite hook-ups as well as composite cables for their DVD players and thought they were seeing an HD picture) so that's why they didn't include HD. I can understand that, but they arn't supporting Dolby Digital?

That's unfortuante. At this point I don't really care about HD in video games as I only have 1 HD television and I don't feel like hooking my system up to that as others use it for television (it's the main TV) but I think surround sound really enhances gaming experiences.

I never really noticed... When you're really into a good game, it gets hard to notice that stuff, in my personal opinion, and no, the Gamecube never supported HD, just progressive scan.

I'm personally disapointed that there won't be DD at this time, but we're still waiting on that, we don't know for sure yet. A lot of the finer details are still tenative.

I hope your right mjr, they said the wii isn't 100 complete so there still is a possibility. but I just played call of duty on the 360 at a buddy's house with no surround, it makes a huge difference. Anymore, it seems like surround sound is a must for FPS (in dolby digital) since you can hear all around you. The only pro logic II ive played that almost sounded like dolby digital is resident evil 4. If they can make the great seperation like they did with re4, i won't be as pissed. but, i still have my fingers crossed.

    I play in 2 channel...

Ive had several surround setups - have yet to miss it.

Still dosnt change the fact Pro Logic is horrible. Center channel mix is next to dead and just sounds bad - the surrounds are mono and have a limited frequency range, and the subwoofer channel is just bad... booo

ProLogic II is not mono in the rears and is full range, and there is plenty of seperation amongst the front stage. You are thinking of the original ProLogic. There is also ProLogic IIx now for 7 channel.

well, not even the Ign editors know why nintendo wouldn't put the optical out on the wii...

http://wii.ign.com/articles/710/710964p1.html. second to last question on the page.

They make some good points that there is no reason why Wii is not dolby digital.

and sorry Vr3MxStyler2k3, i was talking about pro logic II, but still fits your description perfectly except for seperation of surrounds.:)
