Real or BS? I have been toying with the idea of grabbing an hdmi capable dvd player. Research is getting me a wide range of results, from its the greatest thing since sliced bread or a total piece of s***. Do they really work?

They do improve the picture, at least my HD-DVD playing SD-DVD in 1080i is quite a big improvement over my 480i Sony player. I wouldn't invest a lot of money in upscaling player right now with HD formats coming out but a sub $100 player might be worth to test out. Unless you have the budget for a HD player in the near future.

how do you like your hitachi plasma? I am considering the 42HDS52 (also with an swival base). Are you happy with its performace and reliability? How's the SD and HD picture quality? The set looks great in the piano finish black. I'm also concerned with glare, any glaring with the plasma? Sorry, off topic, but not many people have hitachi plasmas

gwsolace.... i have the wrong model in my signature....I have the 42hds52A!! I was too lazy to get off my **** and check the model number.

I have the black....the hd picture quality is spectacular....I was frustrated with it at first with horrible pixalating on the most basic movements. When golf swings are too fast, something is wrong lol. Had to make two minor adjustments. 1st i realized that the factory contrast setting was 100% ack!!!!! (great for clarity, huge strain on tv).....lower that setting then switched to dvi to hdmi cable.....Baaaam!!!! most beautiful friggen thing I have ever seen on the HD channels lol. Even hddvds look good on a standard dvd player. Not HD, but nice.

I say all of that to say, TV is highly recommended by me!!! Plus it friggen looks good. I have it sitting on a Maxim 55 inch smoked black glass tv stands, that also hold all of my electronics.

I also had concerns about plasma glare, but I have had on problems with it. Nothing that takes attention away from the tv. However, I dont have any lamps in the direct line of the tv. Hope I answered your questions

LSI9....the 499. for hddvd is out of my price range at the moment. :)

If you do not want to step up to the HDDVD players but $200 is not out of your price range I highly recomend the OPPO dvd player via DVI or HDMI. It comes with both cables and outputs a gorgeous picture on my 32" HD sony CRT TV. Just a suggestion. I honestly feel that it was money well spent because I am not going to upgrade to HDDVD or BluRay until I get a 65" set to view it on within the next 4-5 years. Plus by then they will really have the two technologies completely worked out and they will be cheaper.

I recommend the new Sony DVD Players. i have the 75 series and its a great DVD Player. Lot of people compare it to the OPPO on AVS forum for about 100 bucks less. I went from a Sony with Progressive to the Upconversion on my Infocus IN76 and it made a pretty big difference in quality.
