Amps and Surge Protection

Is it true that one should avoid hooking up an amp to a surge protector or power conditioner, as it may degrade performance? I thought I read somewhere on this forum that amps should be connected directly to the wall outlet.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. They need a good protector that has no current restrictions or will pass unlimited current.
Some will restrict the current and that lowers headroom.
At least that is what I am learning.
I am in the process of comparing 3 different power conditioners and hopefully I will do a review when all is done. ( I have never done a review)

I was hoping you'd respond Sky...
seems to me your name is synonomous with matters of power conditioners and surge protection.
So are power conditioners the sole culprits of restricting current, or are surge protectors also guilty? I'm not really looking for "clean power" per se, just equipment protection.
(We had the worst lightning storm in years last night, it seemed....)

Looks like another thread is addressing the apparent "futility" of surge protection anyway...

I think with lightning you will be SOL but for surge protection I feel it is a must.

F1nut recomended the PSAudio upc-200 to me for unrestricted filtering and surge protection. I bought 2 of them but I have not had the chance to do my comparrison.
I currently have everything plugged into my Panamax with the Sherbourn amp plugged into the only unrestricted high current outlets on the unit. All of the sub amps are plugged into the filtered banks and I think the subs are now lacking in punch vs. plugged straight into the wall.

I do not think they are futile but they can get quite spendy but. However, if they protect you equipment from normal spikes and dips then is it worth it?
I am not alone in seeing the improvement in picture quality when the video portion of my equipment was filtered.

    Good point Sky..
I hadn't really considered the difference between a power surge and a lightning strike. So does the average, run o' the mill, surge protector provide any filtering, or is it "unrestricted"?

Average surge strips are just for surge.
A decent surge protector will offer some cleaning and surge protection but may not offer unrestricted power.
From what I have learned unrestricted power is the key for high power components like amps and filtering is for digital and analog components.

So with the low end protection, it's best to just plug the amps, AVR's and powered subs into the wall. All else gets the emperor's treatment....
This may seem like a stupid question, but if you're using your AVR as a pre/pro, I suppose it wouldn't make a difference to leave that plugged into the surge protector, as long as the amp is getting its juice directly from the wall socket? Since the amp section of the AVR is basically being bypassed, and thus rendering it solely a "digital/source" component...

I think you are right, the avr can be filtered if you are not using the amps in it.
I think everything worth keeping should have some form of protection but the protection needs to be chosen for its capabilities.

When I get done with my comparrison I will have a pair of psaudio upc-200's protecting all my amps and the better of the two filters/conditioners for my electronics.
