Toshiba 48" tv broke

The set is a 10 year old toshiba rear projection.
This morning I turned on the tv like I always do in the morning and it was making a "pop" sound every 2 seconds like a heart beat. With each pop the picture would jump and the colors would go out of alignment.
I turned it off and on several times and it just keptt with the problem.
Then the popping stopped and the picture settled into an out of alignment picture.
When I put the cross hairs test pattern up I can see that the verticle hold for the colors is working but the horizontal hold is not.
The color lines at the top and bottom will stay in line but the left and right have color shadows real bad.
It did something similar to this before and it was a blown fuse however, last time I did not get the popping heartbeat sound and the alignment of the colors would not move.
This time the alignment will move but not all the way into alignment.
Funny thing is we were thinking about getting a new tv this weekend at one of the millions of sales that will be going on but we wanted to use this one in the game room or bedroom.
I will check all the fuses tonight when I get home. (There are roughly 10 fuses inside the set.)
Hopefully I can fix it because I really don't want to just throw away my first big screen tv just yet.

I checked all the fuses and could not find any blown.
It looks like the tubes are not in focus.
With the cross hairs up I can get the left to right allignment almost perfect in the middle but on the left and right of the screen all three colors are by themselves about an inch apart. This creates real bad 3d effect with the picture.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with this thing?
I really do not like the idea of throwing away my first big screen but I don't think it is worth a $400.00 repair bill.
We are going to get a new tv this weekend but I really wanted this one to go into the game room.
HELP please

We already have too many tube sets around, I just wanted to keep it.
Phunts guy says he will diagnose it for $35.00 so I think I will head that way next week.
It's a good set for the kids Xbox.Skynut
