Huge Problem!

Okay, I admit it is more like a minor inconvenience or aggravation:p .

I have a Denon AVR 3806 that I have had since November 2005, and overall I have been very happy with it, but as of late there has been a glitch that has come up that has got on my last nerve.

The front panel door (under the display) now will not stay fully closed. When new this panel would close flush with the front of the unit, but now will sag (for lack of a better word) ajar after it is full closed. Think car door slightly ajar.

It did not used to do this, and it has been opened and closed very little since I first got it new, this is mostly due to the fact that you can adjust almost all of the features with the remote and the on screen programing. Everything looks just fine with the hinges on the bottom of the door, and nothing seems to be broken. While the top of the door is flush when you close it, it then gaps slightly (maybe 1/8") when you take your hand away. This kind of ruins the clean look to the front of the AVR, and damn it, it irks me!

Has anyone else had this problem, and is there an easy fix? I would really hate to ship it off to have this stupid little annoyance fixed.

i don't know about a fix. but a temp solution might be to get those little round dots of velcro and mount one on the door and one on the Denon. and it will stay closed then. and you wouldn't be able to see it either. when the door is closed.

just a weird solution to an annoying problem

I thought about that, but I do not beleive there is enough clearance between the back of the door and the face of the AVR to make that work. While the velcro would hold it in place, the thickness of the velcro would cause the door to stick out just as far as it is now if not farther. I am going to try that anyway next time I stop into Home Deopt and pick some up, but I do not think that will work. The other thing I am going to try is to get some of the tiny felt pads that you put on the bottom of things to keep them from scratching furniture. I would put one on the side of the opening (between the top side edge of the door and the side of the door opening) to see if this will add just enough friction to keep it closed. Thanks for the idea.

well something had to happen to cause it to be off kilter like that so it doesn't work properly now.

good luck. I think a call to a Denon repair shop might be in your future. maybe it's covered under their warranty?

Is there some sort of latch or does it set into place freely?

NO, if you look at the picture closely, you can see that all of the locking features are built into the hinges themselves. The top of the opening simply has a couple of little tiny pads for the door to rest on.

I read reviews about the same thing happening to the HK 635, but purchased one anyway. Most people used tape (clear, no duct) or velcro as advised in earlier post to resolve the problem.

For fear or it, I actually still have the tape that came on the sides of my HK 635 front panel. . . just in case. Silly that $1200 MSRP AVRs can have QC issues like that, but, oh well.

    Good luck!

I have the same problem and used the same fix as you (kept the tape that came with it) works fine considering how often you really need to open that panel. It's not worth it to me to even consider unhooking, boxing up, sending back, hooking up my old JVC in the meantime, unhooking the JVC, Unpacking the HK, hooking up the HK....just to have the door fixed.

At $1200 MSRP you sure would expect it to work perfect. Maybe this just means they put so much effort into the rest of it they didn't have time to worry about the flipdown cover........right.....

I had a boombox cd player that would not stay shut and I found a small piece of dirt was in the way of the clasp so it could not click shut. I blew it out with air and now it works again.
Tape will leave a residue but the vinyl (i think its vinyl) they use should come off without an issue.
