I am having problems with my ONKYO501E unit. After a party i had in my house things just werent the same, the highs sound fine but the lower frequencies are crapp. For a listener who doesnt know anything they wont notice anything, i now need a sub to fill in that bottom end. i am not sure if i am coming across clear. Could this be a power supply problem, where maybe its burnt, i thought maybe the speakers (B&W602 S3 + LCR600 S3+PSW10) were a bit too loud and the amp bottomed out. They were all bi-wired during the party, still are. When I brought this unit home it was working fine but now the SONY STR DB780 sounds better than the ONKYO when this was the other way around. I did try a different set of speakers to make sure that it wasnt the speakers that were the problem(i tried the Polk Monitor40 to check), still the lower end was very thin and hollow. I have looked at the settings and that has made no difference( by the way this unit does not have the option to set the front speakers big or small). i need to bring the volume higher for the unit to sound half decent even then the bass sounds crapp. How do i fix this.

Try changing the speaker impedance setting in the AVR menu, to see if this circuit is defective now.

I'm not sure but looking for manual / service manual seems to be a entry AVR for Onkyo. So maybe I would upgrade this AVR with an AMP :D if that has pre amp outputs.

I wouldn't throw it out, right now any.

    OK I checked it out............

    No pre amp out.

No 4ohm / 6ohm setting in menu (I was thinking the resistor / ? is bad.)

    Entry AVR

    Are you sitting down?

I don't think is worth to repair it........... What $150- $250?

    Sorry I think you have.........

You have a nice paper weight now.

i think i should get the Marantz 4600 or 5600, i am getting the Rti8 soon and they will need some decent power and if either is not enough power i will need to get a power amp. i was thinking integrated cambridge audio or receiver i hear the stereo imaging is excelent, i listen to music more that watch movies. what do you guys think?

gotta ask yourself what is more important. surround/home theater or music. for me it is 50 50, hence, 2 systems for me. if you have one system, and say music is more important. I say go 2 channel. get a good pre and amp in the used market, and go LSi9 instead of RTi8. RTi;s are great speakers, but LSi's for music is the way to go. not a huge amount more for the LSi9 but will need stands.
