For the past several weeks it's been kinda dead at Blockbuster. Not much there to rent. The movies have sucked all Spring, IMO. The last good rental was the History of Violence. What's the deal? Anything good coming out this summer?

I find it takes me longer to select a movie than it does to purchase audio equipment. Good ones are rare it seems.

I was thinking for the past 7 years. American Beauty was the last truly great cinematic masterpiece that i've seen Hollywood put out imo, and that was from a director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Alan Ball, both whom were from the stage- not the screen.

This is why I like Blockbuster Online (or Netflix), you can have a backlog of movies that you haven't seen. I've caught up on so many movies that I've always wanted to see but had forgotten about. It's great.

Also, aaharvel, maybe you just.... don't like MOVIES. Honestly, if not ONE movie in the past 5 years has been entertaining to you... just stay away from movies. They're not for you.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

The Christmas season was terrible for movies, and as a result there isn't much good for DVDs, and what's worse is you're right about the spring. The movies have sucked by and large.

The biggest day for DVDs this year for me will be on 6-6-06, and that's not saying much. :(

    Underworld Evolution
    Dazed & Confused Criteron Collection
    Entourage Season 2

The only 2 movies I see myself going to the theater to see this year don't come out until later this year. Flags of our Fathers & Zodiac (or whatever the working title is).

Hell yeah Entourage Season 2. Damn can HBO make some great series. I thought Ent. looked horrible fropm the previews, and after one episode I was hooked. Of coarse J. Piven makes the show, but even Johnny Drama and Turtle crack me up.

Movies seem to be going in the same direction as music did 20 years ago -- down the toilet. In spite of technology, the creativity is wanting. Actually, the advent of DVD players and movie rentals allow for lots of bad movies to be made because financially, more money can often be made on rentals, so good story lines, great acting, etc. are not necessary. Same thing happened when music videos hit the scene -- no need for true talent. Just get a cute, scantily clad young woman to shake her hips and lipsync, and a star is born. What's even worse is when you have these weak-**** music performers starring in a movie.

when you (not you directly) over analize movies to this degree... nothing will ever be good enough.. True enough we havent had time and lack of great movies lately.. but if we go to the movie store i know well find something to watch not half bad. Things have changed and its not 20 -30 years ago and alot of great actors/singers are even gone.. this is what we have to deal with,

Like Bobman basically said.. some people just don't like movies if ya can't find something good

I think movies are as good, if not better than they ever have been. Each decade or era has their classics. When you're looking back on a span of 10 years how many great movies can you name versus how many were released? Is the last 10 years any different than the 80s? Not really.

There's a whole slew of great movies I can name that have been released in the last 10-15 years.

I go and buy the pre-viewed from Blockbuster.
Most of the time I buy based on the cover because I do not remember the trailer. Most of the time I am entertained for the duration of the movie.

I like to watch movies and just loose myself in them however, lately they have been better suited for a home style Mystery science theater 3000. We watch the movie and crack jokes about all the hollywood crap that could never ever happen in real life.

Bottom line is we enjoy almost any movie we watch either because it is good enough to entertain us or we are good enough to make it entertaining.

Also there are soooooo many movie studios making movies that come out on DVD and not at the theater.
We used to only get a few movies a year and now there are hundreds made each year.
Some are so bad they come out on DVD first.
Hollywood does not like to take chances, a bad chance means loosin the allmighty dollar; instead they just try and revive old stories that have been done to death already.
They need new ideas and new CEO's.

OK, let's break it down like this -- a movie should have the following fundamental components, regardless of genre or cost to produce:

    -- decent, credible actors
    -- a decent story line
-- create tension (shock, fear, horror, etc.)
-- some level of entertainment value (to keep you from walking out on it)

When one of those elements is missing, the movie suffers. Lately, movies have weak stories and low entertainment value, IMO.

My last 7years comment should be taken only in jest. I didn't say or tried to imply that they weren't entertaining, or not even good. Quite the contrary. But what's the ol' saying- "They just don't make 'em like they used to."

    Too much hollywood hype also.

We watched Transporter 2 the other night and the guys are fighting in the airplane while it is careening out of control. The plane is upside down, nose up, nose down and these two are fighting like it is parked. Then it smashes into the water head first and they continue to fight. they didn't fly to the front and die when it hit the water infact they kept fighting in the water. WTF?
I like to see a little creditability when the movie tries to stay real. Obviously if I am watching hellboy then I know there is nothing real about it but, when it is a diehard flick and Bruce is chasing a bad guy, barefoot, after walking on broken glass and having been shot three times in the lungs..... No good.

Like the Dirty Harry series was believable? Better acting, that's all. Same shoot 'em up and kick **** format. You're not watching it so your hero gets hurt, but so he kicks a whole lot of ****. It's not supposed to be a real life reflection.

I don't know, the movies aren't drastically different other than new and improved tricks with the camera and CGI.

It's easy to make a creative and credible story. I got one --

It's the a heartfelt story of a group of guys (and a couple of gals) who spend too much time on an audio forum and just talk **** all day. Imagine the cast of characters... the comedic moments... the tears.... the drama... and ultimately the sadnesss as the camera looks into the pathetic lives of the forum members... However, the story ends triumphantly when everyone is finally able to hear the differences among cables!!!

Wow. Sounds like a great movie. I'd definitely go see it.
