Upgrading from Advent Large speakers

My parent's have decided that it is time to upgrade to a hometheater rig. They're buying themselves a cantaliever mounted 50" panasonic plasma and now desire the 5.1 surround. They have a decent sub, the klipsch reference 12 which is fine for their room's size, but are thinking of using a pair of 70's Advent Large speakers as fronts.

My question is "would these be appropriate for hometheater"? If not, why not? How good of a speaker are they?

The Larger Advent is a legendary speaker. Acoustic suspension design at it's best. The drawback with AS designed speakers is they aren't all that efficient. You would need to find some Smaller Advents to use as surrounds in order to have a timbre match, IF you want to be all serious about watching movies.

Any idea on how much a smaller pair would run?

Depending on the condition, anywhere from $50-300, with an average of about $125

Those are NOT the REAL Advents. Jensen owns the Advent name now. We're talking about the Advents of the early 70's thru the late 80's. HUGE difference.

I owned a pair of Large Advents for about 20 years and I absolutely loved them. I gave them to a friend when the surounds rotted away and he had them repaired. If you are shopping for Advents, remember that they are almost 30 years old now and the surounds will probably be bad or they will have been replaced. If they have been replaced you will want to check them out carefully to see if they were done properly. They do require a fair amount of power to drive properly but they sounded pretty good with my first amp which was a Sansui 2020 (20 amps per ch. - when that meant something). There wouldn't be anything wrong with using a vintige rig to power these, even in home theater.

I'm of course in the other ball park on this one.. Keep the vintage gear and speakers for 2 channel... Home theater for the most part should be up to date processors and speakers. a nice hearty sub and nice display. you want to get all nostalgic.. get some vintage speakers, some tube gear and make a awesome 2 channel analog rig.. just My 02 cents

sure any speaker can be used.. but will they be practical, look and sound good and keep up with the HT demands.. Not always
    MY HT RIG:
    Sherwood p-965
    Sherwood sd871 dvd
    Rotel 1075 amp x5
    LSI15 mains
    LsiC center
    LSIfx surround backs
    Lsi7 side surrounds
    SVS pb12/plus2

    2 Channel Rig:

    nad 1020 Pre-amp
    Rotel 1080 stereo amp
    Polk sda 2B
    kenwood grunt Tuner
    realistic lab 450 TT
    Signal cable IC
