LSI-7 problem

So, I have a pair of older lsi-7s (with the seems in the front), aforementioned in the forum. My problem right now is that my left front lsi-7 sounds absolutely horrible. I know the tweeter isn't the problem as that still sounds very nice, but the lower range sounds uncontrolled and it horribly grates. There is no physical evidence of anything wrong with the mid-woofer. Any thoughts on what it might be? The crossover perhaps? or the actual driver itself?

Help me out guys, what can I do to discover what it might be? A poor college student such as myself needs all the help he can find ; )

Would it help if I recorded via a microphone what it's doing? Wouldn't be amazing, but I think it could capture the idea.

Thanks in advance.

First off switch the speakers between the channels. Put the left on the right side and the right on the left. This will verify if the problem is with the speaker or your output device.

Lightly push in the mid using four or five fingers around the base of the dustcap. Listen for a nasty scratching noise. If it's smooth and sound free you're in the clear (for that test anyways).

Switched sources and channels and it still sounds bad..

There is no grating from the voice coil when I push in the midrange.

Is there any chance it could be a crossover problem?

Maybe a loose internal conenction? Pull the driver out and make sure that everything is tightly conected.

yes. it is possible it could be a crossover problem.. my friend fried the crossover in his Klipsch's a few months back.

I'd call Ken at Polk Audio customer service.. and see what he says..
