Hi all,

I've been thinking of getting the Xbox 360 Core System and had a couple of questions:

1) Will I be able to play games using the core system or do I need to purchase a hard-drive?

2) Does the Core System support 5.1 or do I need to get some add-on products?

You will not be able to play any of the original Xbox games without a hard drive. To enjoy 5.1 you will need to purchase an extra cable setup. Any of the HD cable packages (component, VGA) also have the optical out port for 5.1. The Premium package has this, the core does not.

IMO, its well worth the extra $100 to get the premium.

Remember, Microsoft announced most retailers will stop carrying the Core system within the next few months. They're moving to only the premium and there are a lot of rumors saying they are going to lower the Premium's price to the Core's price so you may want to wait a little while.

You have to have the hard drive to get updates that let you play more of the older XBox games but I thought you could still play them without the hard drive...

Nope, the HD has the emulator software on it. No HD, no original Xbox games.

I don't really care about the older XBox games since I sold them all when I sold my original XBox.

I think I might just hold of till the Xbox 360 prices are reduced - hopefuly soon or maybe when PS3 is launched.

Odd, I could have sworn it stored it on a chip with the XBox 360 OS.

    Oh well.

Agreed. I first bought the core, but ended up buying all the add ons that came with the premium in the first place. The tradeoff, I was playing the 360 well before most other people.

how could colorado lose to the mighty ducks in 4 games, wow:D ;) . thank god though the ducks are getting their **** kicked by edmonton.who would of thought the oilers would get this far. its going to be oilers vs buffalo in the finals.

yeah sorry for changing the subject anyways:)
do you guys really think microsoft will drop the premium system to 300 bucks? even at 400 bucks, they are 200 dollars cheaper then the ps3. I would love for this to happened but it just doesn't sound right financially, unless they think nintendo might be a threat.

Well it depends on what the PS3 will actually retail at. I do not think that Sony has actually set a firm price on what it will be. If it is close to the 360, then yes the price will probably drop, but if it is higher than say 100 dollars I would venture to guess that the 360 will not drop in price.

    tommyboy,

How long can you wait? Even if they hold firm through Christmas, they may drop the price with the release of Halo 3. A drop in price always makes sense if you want to sell more consoles, and they have a lot of incentive to get the most consoles they can out there at that time. That's what I'm waiting for, anyways.

This has always been an interesting idea, Sony dropping the price. Rumor now, but they did do it rather dramatically with their new 1080i HC3 handycam released a few months ago. It was $1799 even on pre-order from SonyStyle. Then at launch, they reset the MSRP to $1499. Wonder what happened to all those pre-orders ?

I purchased my 360 back in November on the 22nd (release date). It was the core package as I was 2 people too late in the 6 hour waiting line. I ended up spending $70 more then I would have if I had been able to purchase the premium. As far as the PS3 the base model is priced at $500 and this SKU you can not upgrade. (no HDMI output) I used to be a huge PC gamer however after my purchase of the 360 I now have no games on my PC, just Premiere, Pro Tools, and other school related programs. The games run and look better than my PC plus I have the luxury of a large HD display and great 5.1 which makes it even better.
