This isn't political in nature, I just need to know since I don't live close enough to the issues to understand. I just don't get it.

Why would the majority of people in a city that was devastated and mishandled by him, vote him back into office? Aren't those left in the city to vote less affected (homes still standing) by the devastion and have active brains that can tell the difference between someone that cares and someone that can get things done?

The same mentality keeps people like Marion Barry(DC) in public offices....never quite understood it, but that's the way it goes.

Rebuilding a city is way above rebuilding a neighborhood..........I understand voting for "one of your own" as someone that understands your needs, but I would think that during the rebuild, you would want someone that could manage the $$$ the best to get the best possible city for the future.

Then once the shiney new city is vital again, sack their ****, and vote in the guy that cares for the people above the city. This is a time for leadership, not friendship.

What's wrong with Nagin? During the crisis, he was obviously quite passionate about appealing to the nation to help his constituents who were most affected by Katrina. Maybe his base of support believes he supports their interests. I dunno, but that sounds like a good politician.

from what I heard though, there wasnt many solid contenders, I could be wrong though

I rememberred reading that Nagin was a conservative compared to the guy he was running against. I have no idea what the other guys leadership abilities overall were though, its not like Nagin set the benchmark

I do not know what he did before or after Katrina, but he did exacly what he had to during the crisis. Places like Mississippi recieved no help. Fema is who skrewed it up.

But at the same time...an ounce of prevention...

Uh, nothing... (Use the school buses? That will cost money, Warn tourists, just put them on the third floor...) Hence the issues people have with him. That, and he constantly uses race as an excuse for his incompetence. Unfortunately, he was probably the better of the candidates. As sad as that sounds...

Perhaps it's because the other guy was an even bigger schmuck. Unfortunately NO had no good choices in this race and decided to take a known moron over an unknown one.

As Doro pointed out, the idiots in DC elected Marion Barry one than once for Mayor and even after he admitted to being a crack addict, the idiots in his ward still want him as their representive on the city council. The stupidity of those people never ceases to amaze me.

Here is something to think about? I wonder how many of the votes he received were from registered voters without duplicate addresses. I wonder how many voters many have used fake addresses? How would they be able to track it? Remember the polls do not check for ID, they only check for a voter and an address. Who is stopping these people from giving a name and and address to someone for $5 bucks and telling them who to vote for.
I have seen it happen in Philly Go figure!

Good luck to those poor people in New Orleans!
