Dodge 1500 4-door Sub options....

New ride in the family, ready to do a system. I notice a little room under the back seat - great for amps - but what about the sub(s)?

I'd still like to sit 2 adults in the back - the only REAL spot I can see to work with is to build (or buy a prebuilt?) a console, to go in the center rear floorboard. Does anyone sell pre-fabbed boxes for that kind of application? Looking for a stealth install, not interested in high spl, but SQ. I'd giggle if it matched the interior.

Couple of 8's sealed? A 10 bandpassed? I plan to do components up front (not sure which yet) - tweets in the dash, midwoofs in the doors. Coax in the rear doors.

Cheers,
Russ

Good to see ya over here Russ!

I just so happen to have a Ram 4 door and have had major pains in my **** trying to get a sub to work.

I recommend a single sub unless youre wanting a bunch of boom and knowing youre an SQ guy I doubt you do so I say go with the single sub.

As for sizes, you wont be able to fit anything bigger than a 10 under your seat. If youre handy with wood you can build your own box and use the storage space under the passenger side as its a little bigger than the one on the drivers side.

I used 1/2" birch plywood for mine as it is stronger than typical MDF so I could use the smaller wood and still get decent volume. All I was able to manage was .53 but I was limited because I didnt want to get over into the center area cause thats where I keep my amps.

As for pre-made boxes, stay away from them. All except one are plastic and flex like a sumbitch. JL Audio makes an excellent box for both a single 10 under the rear seat or a single 12 that replaces the center console. The downside is they cost $500 plus retail and you cant get them unloaded so you have to use the sub that comes with them which is the W3 which is an ok sub but you could do better.

Here is the thread I started about my box that I built. It has a couple pics to give you an idea.

You can also go with a single 8. They are much smaller and would be a lot easier to build a proper box for.

note that glassing the box will give you more airspace over a traditional wood box, but that you'll have to learn how to glass to do it :)

    www.proboxrocks.com

    They make a sealed 2-10 box, a sealed 2-12 box, a 2-square 8" bandpass box and a 2-round 10 bandpass box.

The regular boxs run about $169.95, the band pass about $269.95. They are covered in a bed liner material.

they dont have the regular boxes up, but they do have em. If you live anywhere near college station/bryan, you can come to our shop and i can probably get you the sealed 2-10 or 2-12 for $130 or so, maybe less. We dont carry the bandpass boxes anymore

I wish somebody made a single 10 box that was well made and didnt extend into the middle of the underseat area. All they make are dual sub boxes.

Is that an SR x-over just laying under the back seat? I thought I taught you better.

LOL!!! Nah, Ive got more respect for the SR's than that. Thats an "in progress" picture.

When I had my 8 in there I had my x-overs mounted basically in the upper right hand of where that new box is. I took that picture as soon as I dropped the box in there and I was in the process of relocating the x-overs and all the speaker wires to the other side of the truck. Thats a chore too. 4 channels to the x-overs and 4 channels to the speakers make for a lot of wire....and tangles!

They are now mounted under the drivers side of the underseat area right up on the upper part above the storage space. This way theyre out of the way, dont take up any storage space but are still easily accessible.

Im actually very proud of my underseat layout. It aint very fancy or trick but Ive got a good amount of gear crammed in there yet its uncluttered, out of the way, with all gains and level's easily accessible and it retains a lot of storage space. I know thats child's play for you pros but for me that is an accomplishment!

Aaron, we got a new probox in a couple weeks ago that was a single 12" and only took up half the back cubby hole. We sell em for like $129.
Thought you might want to know:-)

Thats cool! But I need it to not go into the middle of the underseat area. Thats where I have my amps mounted. If I mount them under the drivers side underseat area I losed all my storage and the spot where I have my SR x-overs mounted.

If you get a box in for a single sub that stays within the boundary of that hole, Ill be all for it!

Hmmm. I just went to the Probox website and looked at their boxes for the Ram Quad Cab. Apparantly what they do is seal off the top of the underseat area and uses those storage holes as the enclosures rather than building a box that is completley sealed!

I wonder if something like that would work! If I could get that to work I might be able to fit one of the SR 10's in there!

But from the looks of it, it isnt a box at all. It just fits over the two holes under the seat and uses them as the enclosure.

its a bandpass. It has an enclosure where the subs mount and above and then utilizes your cubby holes as the rest. It screws down to help seal it as well as being pressed againt the bottom of the seat.

Thats still a great idea. I would have to build the top portion of the box, maybe line the inside of the hole with something to ensure it would be air tight, use either some sealant or a rubber gasket and then bolt the top of the enclosure down the the floor!

    That could work!

    Cody youre a genius!!!

No, wait a minute. Those cubby holes arent totally solid. The front part of them have very large openings in them. Even if I could make it airtight, it would flex like a mo-fo.

never said it was a perfect design. But the more and more i think about it, the more the box just looks like a box with an inverted sub and a plexi cover. I mean look at it, has a sealed enclosure, the sub is mounted inside, the outside isnt really sealed...hmm

Plus, ive never heard of a bandpass with 2 sealed enclosures...
