Home Theater painting

My wife and I recently bought a new house that will be built this summer. We will have a home theater room(18x18) and I was curious what people have painted their home theater rooms. I'm leaning towards a maroon or a type of grey right now, but I have plenty of time to think about it. I can't wait for this house to be done and fire up our home theater in its own room.:)

I would paint it like a circus tent...stucco floor, no shoes allowed.

Sometimes picking out a paint color can be tough. When I was in the process of revamping my room, I wanted to go with a burgundy color. However, my sofa and recliners were blue. My wife said red was out of the question. I ended up going with a deep blue color for the walls. Pittsburgs "Admirality". In an eggshell finish. When watching a movie I get no light reflectiions from the walls. My next step will be to paint the soffit above the TV a flat black or dark grey color. I don't want to, but I get reflections when watching movies with the FP.
In order to make the room seem a little brighter I went with burgundy colored acoustic panels. They really help break up the dark color. I really like the mix.

    Go with maroon/burgundy.

On a serious note, which was a stretch, keep it medium toned - dark toned.

The color palette is still plentiful in this category, and you can also look into acoustic panel fabrics(DIY offers a huge selection) and/or drapes at the same time to help with final color choice. The wife should actualy LOVE this whole process.

There's no need to create a room that "feels bigger", as it defeats the purpose. Don't let Trading Spaces decide this room as it goes against the grain of most interior design principles.

Thanks for the replies. Whatever color I go with the finish should be flat correct?

My favorite is a dark blue, then a maroon. Take Doro's advice and build some room treatment panels. They make a huge difference.

So what do you think of my weekend project? Been wanting to update for awhile and finally settled on a color. I call it Cabernet. Ignore the carpet, the next side job and its gone;) . Not quite a seperate home theater room but I thought you might like the color.

I really like the color of the walls for the home theatre. I might of went ahead and darkened the window borders and roof as well.

So this room is 18'x18'? Your TV looks about 58"-60"? So do you plan to put a couch or theatre seating near the back of the room? Just curious on what your plans are for the finished project. If you have a diagram of what you are shooting for, I would be very interested. Always love to see a plan come together.

Though it may cause some sound reflection problems, a nice dark stained hardwood floor would be easy to clean (for football weekends) and open the room up a bit more.

Easy now boys. Its not a home theater room. Its a 85 year old farmhouse living room. And to say that there is a grand plan is a gross overstatement:p

And anybody that wants to come help me strip the 15 coats of paint(at least 5 of them lead based) off of the trim is welcome at my home anytime:D

The wall behind my HT is called Deep Garnet. It took 2 coats of colored primer and 2 coats of paint and we are going to put on 2 more coats after we design and build wall treatments.
the rest of the theater room is gray. Light gray and some dark grey.
We just ordered blind in Red mohogony and we are looking for curtains in a burgandy.
Carpet is probably comming up real quick.

Flat black is the only way to go, but if you cannot handle the cave look go dark blue. Just keep the color as dark as you can.

For that much effort, it might be better to just remove the trim an update it completely eh?

Color looks good opus. This is gonna be one tough decision trying to decide what color to go with. I have until November to think about it so I have plenty of time to decide.

That's why I hired me one of them there wives. She works great, and even keeps the baby quiet, well, most of the time.
