How do I get the best bass response from my R40?

I purchased a pair of R40's and found that the dome tweeters were shot and there seemed to be a loss of the bass speaker in one. There was a clear difference between the two with one having a better bass response. I assumed that of the two 5" speakers one was relegated to the bass and this one was blown. After opening up the cabinet and removing what I thought was the mid-range I realized that these two speakers were hooked up in series and both were working normally. The only difference between the two cabinets was the placement of the plastic fiber sound buffer. One was setting higher in the cabinet than the other. Considering that I have sealed the cabinets back up I was hoping to get some feedback on the original config. before going through what I think would be an extensive trial and error process.

Would appreciate any comments,

Are you sure you don't have the speakers hooked up in reverse polarity? Pos to neg? Check that out, may seem stupid, but it is pretty easy to do.
