I got an XBox 360 for my birthday and it's pretty nice but man!...is it loud. The fan sounds like it wants to take off. Is that normal?

Wow. Grats on the awesome birthday present. If the fan is anything like the one on the original xbox, it's probably pretty normal (and loud).

Games have pretty constant volume so It doesn't but me much. I don't think they intend on canging it... consoles put out a lot of heat now.

    WNut,

It is normal, only when playing games though. If you are just in the main 360 dashboard then the fan is off, and if you are watching a movie, the fan is also off.

And I noticed some games make the fan work harder than others, like PGR3 makes the fan go nuts.

OH BTW here is a little FYI....the 360 will play PAL movie disks.

That was my first comment on the 360 when i visited a friend. I walked in and thought a jet was flying overhead. You would think a company that can come up with a OS as amazing and failproof as windows:rolleyes: would be able to have the common sense to spend the extra 50 cents per console on a sub 20 db fan.

I just got my replacement 360 (the first one died on me), and the one I got back was much louder than the first. Holy smokes its loud. Louder than my computer, which is also pretty dang loud.

The main culprit of how loud the system is, is the DVD drive, when it spins up it is quite loud. That is what you guys are mainly hearing.

This being Polk Audio forums, doesn't evenyone have sound systems to cover it up? I kid. :p

Mute (no pun here), the main culprit this time is the fan specifically.

Well I can assure you that the DVD drive is louder than the fans.

while the dvd player is loud when it fires up...it is not the problem these guys are referring too. The consistent noise from the fan is what annoys people, although that initial sound from the dvd drive can un-nerve the new xbox360 owner a time or two

The DVD makes a minimal amount of noise on startup, but then runs quietly.

The fan on our upstairs unit is louder than the Thermaltake CPU cooler on the tower computer.

.....that unit, by the way, was manufactured on September 21, 2005. It started freezing/dieing today.
I think it's a power supply problem. The MS 1-800 number isn't up and running 24/7  so we'll give them a call Monday morning.

We're going to get an aftercooler today at Gamestop for this unit, extra noise or not.

I am sorry to hear that man. :( MS is pretty good with the exchanges. I had a 360 die on me myself and I received a new one in roughly a week. Hope you get your problem resolved quickly and painlessly. :D
