This was an add on announced at E3 (which they actually showed), currently no price on them just yet. Just thought it was rather interesting. This means that Microsoft has put it's money behind HD-DVD.....

I won't buy it. I have no reason to, unless certain games require it.

why didn't microsoft already have this built in to the system instead of making this an add on!? Now people are going to waist a few hundred dollars more for this system, I think I'm only going to spend 200 dollars on a system, and its called wii (better called revolution). that new zelda looks awesome

The cost of an HD-DVD drive would have drastically increased the price of the system especially when it was initially released. MS could have done what Sony is doing where they are forcing the gamers to purchase a system with a $200 price increase to include their proprietary Blu-ray format. MS is giving the gamers a choice. MS has stated that none of the games will require the HD-DVD drive, it is purely for movie playback. DVD9 is more than enough in regards to storage. You consider immense games like Oblivion which is by far the largest most detailed game I have every played and it only weighs in at about 4.5 GB. If games need to be significantly bigger than that it is purely the developers being lazy and not optimizing their games. Here is an interesting article on this subject.

Haha, how do you compare that to a HD-DVD player?
