Did I just fry my AVR?

First off, I know the thing is a piece of crap, but it's done what it's supposed to for 3 or 4 years now, and that's at least give me something to listen to.
In any event, my friend and I were completely dismantling my TV, Receiver, Speakers, DVD Player, Video Game systems, etc., so that they could be moved to a different location. I had just pulled the rack out from against the wall and I ask my friend if he's got everything unplugged (oh yes, here it comes!). I start taking the speaker wires out of the left main, throw them on the floor and then I hear the 'click'. Ugh, the goddamn receiver is not only still plugged in, it's on. In hindsight I should have double checked and beyond that I should have removed the wire from the AVR first, then the speakers.
In any event I quickly turn everything off and get everything unplugged. In the interest of finding out if the AVR is okay I hook up the receiver, cd player, and one speaker. Nothing...and the receiver is in Protect Mode. As soon as I turn it on it shows whatever channel it was last left at and then Protect Mode starts blinking. I cleaned out the speaker ports to make sure there were no stray strands of wire, everything. Nothing has helped.
I definitely need to upgrade, but I was trying to take my time with that. I was also trying to take my time with deciding between pre/pro amps or going with another AVR -- now I just find myself being impatient and wanting to go out and buy a new receiver.
So, does it sound like my AVR just shot the wad here, if not, how do I fix it? (Keep in mind, NOTHING in the manual talks about Protect Mode).
Any help would be appreciated.

Try this, Demi:
FACTORY SET MODE
* All preset contents are reset to the default setting.
* Procedure:
While depressing the VIDEO and the CD buttons simultaneously,
press the power [@/1] button to turn on the main power. The
message FACTORY appears and the present contents are reset to
the default values.
FYI, here is the link for technical manual of your AVR:
https://www.vancebaldwin.com/shop/research_new/SON/STRDE545.pdfI am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
That's usually the death knell of most lower line Sony AVR's.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks, I did try that earlier and it didn't help. Bummer.dorokusai wrote:That's usually the death knell of most lower line Sony AVR's.
Figured as much, well...time to start shopping it looks like. -
should be THE reason for celebration, dude! anytime mine failed, I immediately look at the options. Hell, if it failed, then no guilt-trip to spend money on the one.
ain't this hobby a ****?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Yeah, do the happy dance, toss that piece of junk, and buy another receiver.
Make sure it has pre-outs in case you want to run separate amps.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I'm probably going to buy the Pioneer Elite VSX52TX to hold me over for a while. I'm going shopping, see you guys later.

It's a shame Sony did not see fit to throw a couple 20 cent fuses in line with the speaker outs. The fact that it is in protect mode indicates the logic circuit sees a fault.
You likely fried one or more of the output amplifiers and possibly some associated circuitry.
Give your buddy a sound smack on the back of the head and make him pay for the beer tonight.

i agree, it was with my old Sony. -
You may want to consider this vendor for the Pioneer:

I own the said Pioneer now. I went in and demoed a whole bunch, along with the LSi9s, they didn't have anything else. I liked the Pioneer the best so I went with it. I plan on dropping the bulk of my cash into some good amps so I didn't want to spend like $1,500 or more on an AVR. I feel good about the purchase.
I also got a free pair of Polk Monitor 5s with the purchase, no idea what I am going to do with them at this point. -

Great choice. I own this one, too. Bought it from United Online Shopping (great customer service). I'm sorry, I should have said Monitor 30. haha, my mistake -- must be the excitement.
Yes, what a dope!!!! Actually I should have looked so it was all my fault. The crappy thing about it is that it would have made a nice computer rig since I am starting to get a bunch of extra speakers that aren't in use now since I am on my 3rd upgrade session for Polk Speakers. -
Did you bother to open the unit up and see if there are fuses in there that can be replaced? .60c is a helluva lot cheaper than several hundred for a new reciever. Just a thought....perhaps you did this already.

It's not a user serviceable unit in that respect. It's usually the transformer or power supply, about $30-40 in the older units. I guess it depends on what you paid but I would consider it a lesson learned....stick with the ES line.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers?
