I've recently updated my receiver to an RXV2600, which means I can finally play DTS tracks. I have found them to be a lot louder than DD and wanted to ask if this is normal? I find myself seeking out my DTS movies for some serious sound immersion :)

DTS is basically a less compressed version of DD. I find DTS is louder and more dynamic on my sytem as well. I also seek out DTS recorded movies when I am shopping.
I am sure I am most entertaining to my friends when they are over. When I play a DTS movie I always jump up and point to the DTS illumination on my receiver and yell "DTS in the house"

I must admit, I'm also smitten with all the speaker symbols lighting up and seeing DTS on the front panel. I didn't know what I was missing. We watched Reign of Fire the other night (first DTS movie) and when the dragon came out of it's hole and up the shaft my wife almost shot off the couch with the dynamic punch of the sound and the sub rumbling so much - almost made me laugh - after recovering from the shock of it :)

Enjoy it Groover. There are more and more titles popping up on DTS. I could recommend a whole slew I suppose, but hoping that you enjoy music I will recommend the Eagles, Hell Freezes Over.
The only negative I can say is they chose to play many of their softer hits and the middle of the DVD gets quite sappy. Still the overall sound is great.
    Happy listening.

The LFE for DTS is 3dB cooler than the same DD track in my setup, and I've noticed the mains are a few dB cooler as well. However, DTS is more spacial, directional, and just flat out sounds better once the volume is cranked a couple notches more on the dial. As said before, this is true because of the higher bitrate. I've also noticed that DTS only DVDs (higher bitrate than dual DD/DTS soundtrack DVDs) sound even better. However, I have found that the best movie soundtrack is the DTS track on the LOTR Extended editions; IMO of course! I have a Denon THX Ultra certified AVR-4800 receiver.

Hopefully lossless audio will make its way to blu-ray/hd-dvd and the playing field will be leveled out. But judging by early disks, the trend is still to compress the audio albiet at a higher bitrate this time.

Usually. But i've recently discovered "Dolby VS Wide" on my receiver. It's a 5.1 implemenation of Dolby Digital's "Virtual Speaker" Technology that not only sounds louder than DTS, but it imo it sounds better. More spatial, dynamic, better dialogue intelligibility, etc. If your receiver has it, I would seriously consider it. It's become my new default for 5.1 material.

Last night I watched Kingdom Of Heaven, and did an A/B comparo between the DTS mix and the Dolby VS Wide- there was no comparison between the two.

Sorry Grover I just couldn't help myself.

I noticed DTS is a bit more defined in which speaker the sound is comming from. It also seems abit louder.

I see what you mean. Re-reading it I went red :o Funny how some things read after the fact! If the actual situation seemed funny, then this is even funnier:D

Nice receiver I have the 2500. DTS does sound great, but I think both have their advantages.

It's a nerd alert if you just say in casual conversation, "Gee guys, did you know we have DTS in the house here and it's just swell"

When yelled with authority, with some urban ethnic accentuation on the word "howwwse" it's not nerdy at all. More obsessive or physchopathic actually. :D
