Sub needed for music on SurroundBar?
Is a sub really needed for listening to music on the SurroundBar? I know I can do without it for movies. I listen mostly to acoustic/alternative/classical. I will listen to some DVD-Audio and SACD. TIA

actually, you'd need the dynamics of a sub MORE for movies than music. But that aside, what's your room size and what's your price budget?Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.
Home Setup: Sony VPL-VW85 Projo, 92" Stewart Firehawk, Pioneer Elite SC-65, PS3, RTi12 fronts, CSi5, FXi6 rears, RTi6 surround backs, RTi4 height, MFW-15 Subwoofer.
Car Setup: OEM Radio, RF 360.2v2, Polk SR6500 quad amped off 4 Xtant 1.1 100w mono amps, Xtant 6.1 to run an eD 13av.2, all Stinger wiring and Raammat deadener. -

For that size room, I would suggest a subwoofer for music. It doesn't have to be a high quality subwoofer, although that would help, but I would recommend a subwoofer nonetheless.Tschüss

Do you think this would match up nicely with the SurroundBar?

That one looks decent enough. If you want a serious subwoofer for movies, one that extends a little lower might be a good option. Or, although the frequency response is not much different, you might check out the hsu stf-1:http://www.hsustore.com/stf1.html
It looks to be within the same price range and size. I know hsu is well known for musical subwoofers.Tschüss

It is odd how little discussion there seems to be on the effect of subwoofers on music. I'm not talking about rap music, either. -
Well if price is no problem, I suggest the Sunfire Solitaire 10. Sealed enclosure, amazing sound quality and a sexy black finish. Retails around $1600 but can be found for less.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

My room dimensions, when I move in my new home ( 90 days) will be a
rectangle 15' wide, 30' long and 18' ceiling. Open kitchen/living room. The A/V equipment will be in a niche on the 15' wide part.
I will for sure be getting the surround bar..but don't know about the sub.
It will be between the PSW12 or PSW303...This will be my first HT setup.
I am also leaning to the Denon 686 receiver. Comments please.

Why did you buy the surround bar if your main concentration is music? still time to take it back? You could get some pretty nice speakers for 2-channel for that amount of money and not need a sub for your music.
I haven't heard the Surround bar, but would guess you would need a sub to fill in the lower end. While you don't listen to RAP there are still things you would miss when playing classical without the sub.HT

You'll definitely need a sub, for music and movies. The drivers are too small to give you the type of dynamic sound you're looking for. The SoundBar wasn't designed to replace a sub, just the mains, center, and surrounds.comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
Since you are still on the fence about integrating a subwoofer, try this: buy a sub and try it out with the surroundbar. If you like it, keep it. If not, return it. I know CC and BB carry at least 30 day return policies. Again, I think you will want a sub, even if it mainly for music, but you have to be the one to make that decision.Tschüss
