Dipoles in room with no rear wall

I am considering purchasing dipoles for my surround speakers. The problem is that the room has no rear wall i.e. I understand that when mounted on the side walls, dipoles use the rear wall to reflect the sound. Would I be wasting my time with dipoles?

Well....yeah.You will be better off with a lsi 7 or 9 on a stand
behind your listening position. You could still use dipoles as a side surround
but you need something behind you to throw the sound at ya.Or even an in ceiling speaker would work also.Best I can tell ya given the limited info.HT SYSTEM-

Are you able to set up stands behind you? If so then the speakers set to Bipole would be your best bet.

That way you could use your side walls to get the surround effects.Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

Thanks for the replies. I have no rear wall because the rear of the room (where the wall would normally be) flows into another room.
I currently use Polks on stands behind me. I am trying to get away from the stands i.e I would like Dipole on the wall or perhaps ceiling speakers.
What about using ceiling speakers and aiming the tweeters at the side wall to reflect the sound? -
I would recommend getting both ceiling and dipole if your receiver can handle it. This will give you true 7.1 sound or if you prefer just one ceiling speaker 6.1.
Now if you can get bipole ceiling speakers, you may be able to get away with just having rears and still get a very full sound. However I am not sure that bipolar ceiling speakers is possible. I will leave that answer to these other wizards of sound.Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

My revceiver handles 7.1
So do you suggest dipoles as surrounds and ceilings as rears? If so, the dilema is that the room is only only 12 feet wide and the ceiling speakers cannot be placed any further back past the dipoles. This would mean 4 speakers within a straight 12 feet span. Would this just confuse the sound?
NB: The ceiling speakers can't be placed any further back because the theater room ceiling is flat but angles up at 45 degrees into the next room where the rear wall would normally be. Hope that made sense.
What about using ceilings as surrounds and keep my exisiting speakers on the stands to use as the rears? This would mean 7.1 but also means that I would still have the speakers on stands. -
Polk customer support have advised that "Yes they (dipoles) can
certainly be used on the sides even with no wall in the rear."
