i am starting my sono sub project i have a 18 inch tube 5 feet long and i am tuneing to 16 hz i am using a tempest and the encloser has 25o leters i think prety sure here is what i have questons about is to use 1 4 inch flaired port or 2? and should i stuff it with polly fill and how much? here is what i have so far i have decided to make a tabble for behind my couch i am raising the tube 3 inches off the floor. this is huge i dident think it would be this big ron did you go with the 250 plate amp?

    Yep, 18" x 60" is 250 L.

    Sorry, but I cannot lend a hand with the porting. I did not do any research in that area as I want sealed.

    As for polyfill. If you port your sonosub, do not stuff the sub, just line the tube. If it is sealed, then you want to stuff it. You want the driver to 'think' it is in the largest enclosure possible.

    HERE is a link to a lot of different sonosub projects. I went thru most of these to get ideas for mine. Check'em out, they will help.

    You want to go a least 6" off the floor, unless your driver will be on the top of the tube. Or, are you planning on laying it horizontal?

    You can go smaller. My sonosub is only 177L, if the tube is too big, shrink it.

    hey ron the check is in the mail lol i am makeing a tabble out of mine i also have a left over 3 ft piece of the tube where i got it they charge by the foot and the guy who cut it said i could keep the scrap. here is a pic of the first mock up of the ends i am going to use good wood to do the trim and i am going to but a high gloss black in the trim and a mat on the in fill

    Ron, where in socal did you find your sonotube? I tried a HD, hard enough finding someone to ask where stuff is. Also what jig did you use? Thanks

    I picked up the sonotube at White Cap. You can find them online at whitecapdirect.com. They are in Santa Ana.

    I have a Bosch Progressor that I used to cut the inner circles with and then I bought the outer plywood circles at Home Depot.

    i cut my circles with a jig saw and smothed it out with my roughter makeing the edges square my jig saw is old and cant cut at a right angle

    Ron,

    The circles you got, 3/4" plywood? Was it the 24" ones from Home Depot? Would it matter much if I went with 5/8 particle board instead of plywood?

    I will say one thing about that 5/8 particle board at home depot....it chips/cracks/splits when you try to put a screw or nail through it....

    Ron did an MDF/Plywood sandwhich I believe...I'd stay along those lines....

    Do not use particle board. That stuff sucks like a hoover. I did use the pre-cut 24" from Home Depot.

    here is a pic of the work so far this is the port endcap i am using 2 4 inch ports i have the first one cut out working on the seccond and the input cup but i havent decided on a single or dubble input.

    and here is a pic of the other side it is allmost done just have to atach the driver and put a cpuple of coats of paint on it and buld the trim the other trim is just a mock up and i am going to paint it gloss black

    Ron & goinggonzo, how thick are your sonotubes? THanks! I may get lucky with just using the precut circles HD sells, they have em in 24" & 23 3/4" 3/4" thick plywood

    The sonotube runs at just about 1/4" thick.

    Do not use plywood for the inner cap, it is too porous, too many air pockets. But, it works great for the outer cap.

    Yes, use the 3/4" MDF (Medium density fiber board) This stuff is dead, voidless material. Home Depot sells it in 4x8 sheets for about $20.

    Also, always predrill into the MDF first. Never just slam in a nail or screw, the stuff will fragment apart.

    i am using 2 layers of 3/4 mdfb there is 1 layer in the tube and the other layer is the face for the sides of the tabble i just got dune with the seccond port and installed them i had ti use 4 layers of constructon paper to make the tube between the flaried ends i can allways re do them if i can fund the right tube

    Ok guys I finally found where I can get some tube. FRIGGIN Missouri an hour and a half away! So screw the tube! So I have yet another question on "what is your opinion". Which would be better for HT purposes a Velodyne CHT15 or two Polk PSW450's. I know the Velodyne is supposed to do 23 cycles as opposed to the Polks 35 cycles. So the real Q is. How much difference do those 12 hertz make? The Polk's would get alot louder (I believe). The Velo would just get LOW I mean like RON-P low. So which would you guys buy?????? Cost difference is not something I am worrying about. Polk's $900 Velo $700. So what's up?
    PS on yet another side note I'm getting trashed :D
    Why do I always do it on a Sunday? That is a question I would really like to know. Is it because work starts again tommorow? Is it because I am winding down from the weekend? HMMM

    the 15 velo would give a bit more punch down low hence it is beter suted for ht the 450's would be more musical. to find sono tube call constructon suply near you and ask for sono tube and if they dont have it ash if they can recomend some one who sells it near you that is how i got mine took me a nour to find a place ps 18 inch tube wont fit throgh a pass throgh on a gm mid sized car like the alero or grand am

    I agree with, Ganzo, for home theater go with the 15" velo. If it were for tunes, I would go with the Polks.

    my 24" x 24" sonotube barely fit in my front seat. The sonotubes they sold, some looked like missle silos :)

    when i got mine there was a storage room with tubes up to the celong they were 14 ft long and they had them in every size dlew what driver are you going to use in your sub?
