Heres the thing though...
IPods are the 5 in 1 speaker, satelitte speaker, and smaller enclosure of the audio world. Whats the connection?
Have you ever looked at the speakers from the 80's and the speakers of today? Well if you havnt, Ill go ahead and tell you that the ones of today are 1/3 the size. Im not saying they sound better or worse, but I do know that in general a properly designed large speaker sounds better than a small one. Most 50,000 + dollar speakers are insanely large.
Until they figure out how to get a giant **** set of speakers to accompany me on a run, while it mutes every other sound around me, I will stick with my iPod.
The iPod is simply a more functional Walkman. -
There is a big difference between the Ipod and a Walkman.
The IPod is all digital media. True that some of the media used on the IPod by the user is from their own CDs. But lets face the question of, why would an IPod user want to purchase any more hard copy CDs because now all they have to do is download it.
Now I dont know about you, but I have never heard a song that you downloaded sound half as good as a hard copy version. Im sure it exist, but your general IPod user isnt going to be using it.
So all this tells me, is eventually CDs will become obselete due to dirty ol MP3s - because who wants to be limited to a hours worth of music? Why not 100 hours worth (or more) -
Get what I am saying? We are showing my generation that music is easilly attained and you dont need the trouble of having those fragile disc around. I dont know about you - but the last thing I want is a player that has a removable harddrive - I particularly like my disc during reference listening.
Everything has a side-effect, and no company ever really looks at the side-effect, and if they did, they most likely still wouldnt care.
"Audio-Philes" or Enthusiasts, whatever you want to call yourself - are a rare breed and in decision making, we don't count. The General Public does however - its been proven time and time again.
I think that was a pretty good post considering I just woke up...haha- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
It's a different strokes for different folks situation.
I buy lots of CDs, and I rip them at high bitrates. They sound just fine for me when I want something entertaining to listen to while I am out for a run or on the trails. It also alows me to click through a vast array of media very quickly...no fooling around changing discs or tapes. It's functional and enjoyable.
I don't download music much, other than to hear if I like a new band, a new CD, or not...I am pretty experimental so it doesn't happen all that often. But no...I don't pay to get MP3s, and to some MP3s are just fine for their ears. Not everyone is anal retentive about their music, and there isn't anything wrong with that. I am definitely not an audiophile, as I like to enjoy my music rather than constantly thinking about what will make it sound just that much better. It's cool for those who like that, but it's not me, and it's not the majority as you said yourself.
That said, I don't know why anyone who gets nothing from this form of media would waste their breath talking about it. It's beyond your control and it's not stopping this rocket from taking off.
I don't listen to MP3s at home, docking stations are something I won't ever buy, although they're probably great for the kitchen or office. I'd rather have something of higher quality to listen to at home where it's economical. There's no economical way to have high quality recordings with you while you're out and about.
The iPod really is a more functional Walkman, you're at the mercy of the headphones or earbuds plugged into your head for the quality of sound you hear. You're not going to get reference quality sound on the go. -
What's with the Terminator mentality. The Ipod isn't ruining the world people......The problem y'all have is with Mp3's, not with the devices that have the functionality to play several formats, some with a higher bitrate than others.
Just because it doesn't serve a purpose for your personal needs doesn't mean they're evil. It is MUCH better than a walkman with more music options, and a smaller package. Rip your music at a higher rate and you'd be hardpressed to have a problem with them in using them for their primary purpose. I'd say 99% of the world isn't sitting in their living room with their HT or 2 channel system and blasting them with their headphones.comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
Well said Sid. The Ipod is great for the market it's aimed at. If you want higher quality then don't buy one! For the average listener it's what works. The ones who want the best quality possible (like the members of this forum) won't be happy with Ipods, but the much bigger market made up of average Joes and teens will. And that's where the money is, bottom line. There are just a lot more of them than us.Larry

Strange I can get joy from the iPod and good quality speakers at the same time.
The arguments here are like John Madden's football commentary -- "Now that you have the ball you gotta try and score points?" No, **** -- master of the obvious. iPods aren't supposed to make superior sound. They're supposed to give you music on the go where you can't take a high powered quality rig. -
I-SIG wrote:Second, I have a 6 disc changer in my truck, plus AM/FM. Why do I need yet another electronic device for music in there?
You have 6 cd's to choose from, with 60ish songs. Maybe more cd's, if you have a extremely large bulky cd case in the car, which someone can break into and steal. I can have 10-15,000 songs in a tiny enclosure, and take it with me when I'm not in there. Need any more reasons?I-SIG wrote:Third, while out jogging, hiking, walking, etc. is it better to blissfully unaware of the car or rapist or bear or rattlesnake sneaking up on you or to be entertained for those extra minutes in a day?
Umm....yeah.....I'll keep an eye out for the rapists, bears, and snakes....just in case, ok??? As for cars, if they're rolling up on the sidewalk, I think I'd be done for even without headphone on. -
