Stupid question about CD bass...

I'm a complete newbie to the area of sound, so perhaps someone can help me out.

Just wondering why I don't get any bass when I'm playing CDs on my 360/DVD player. I understand that most CDs aren't 5.1, but shouldn't my receiver 'fake' the bass signal or something? If not, is there any way to do so?

The reason why I think it's possible is because my car can split the bass signal to the bass fine.

Thanks for any help,

Sven

Are you just using the straight stereo pass through? If so, your sub is probably not getting any signal and you're going to be limited by your front speakers. In your car, the head unit usually will crossover the signal and send the low stuff to the sub and all the rest of it to the full range speakers.

I have the SurroundBar and a 12" sub from Polk. I'm connected to the receiver from my 360 by an optical cable. If I play the 360, my game will have bass, but my ripped music does not. am I missing a configuration setting?

Make sure your reciever setting for your speakers is small or if you prefer large, that your sub setting is plus. If you are listening to stereo bass, then you want to make sure that the frequencies below the crossover point are being directed to your sub. If you have your speakers set to large and don't have the plus setting (may be called something else) on, then the only signal you will get will be the LFE or .1 signal. 5.1 soundtracks will send the bass to your sub, but stereo tracks will not.

small all speakers, sub set to on. It's quite possible that your CD analog L/R" configuration is set differently than the DVD Digital out on your receiver.

Also, the .1 tends to have bass overkill on dvd's, at least in my opinon. I've never been a fan of the .1 channel myself.

properly set up.. a subwoofers bass extension should compliment the rest of your system.. not dominate it. if all you are hearing is thump, thump, thump.. then the set up is not right.
