Turntable Ground Loop

It is my understanding that the ground loop cable is meant to minimize system hum. Does it improve sound in other ways?

I ask because my ground loop cable broke when I was installing my TT (it was definitely my fault). I don't hear a hum without it, but am I losing other benefits by not using it? Hope this question makes sense.

Thanks.

If the ground line is tied to the negative on the outputs and the chasis of your phono stage is tied to the negative on the inputs, then the ground wire does nothing- a lot of people will do this to get rid of it and some newer tables have this done.
