The HD DVDs are making its debut this week. Any takers? It doesn't look like it is making rave reviews...

I would consider one, but my sixth sense is telling me: "Be patient, grasshopper." I guess the decision on what the standard HD format should be seems to be the issue. I'm not in a hurry to throw away my DVDs.

Oh well...

You read one review over at IMDB and decided not to buy one? If that's the case, why not read another?

    http://www.projectorcentral.com/hd-dvd.htm

Please note that the A1 will upconvert all your SD-DVDs to 720p making them look quite a bit better then your 480p player, so you don't have to "throw away" your dvds.

By the way, that LA Time article they refer to over there at IMDB. Here's the entire article. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-technopolis20apr20,1,2768791.column?coll=la-headlines-business&ctrack=1&cset=true It's fair to say this guy and his article are pretty worthless.

Read through my thread that Demiurge posted on my thoughts as well, page 2 for HD-DVD movie comments.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Good thread, however it got off course...

I still would like a very good A/B test: two similar titles, one conventional DVD versus the new HD DVD - side by side. Also, head-to-head players: one conventional and the other the HD player. That would be the ultimate experience.

you must have a nice tv to optimize this player. elite's, dlp's work exellent, any other tv seems like it's just a regular movie. might be a little crisper than previous 480 installments, but to my eyes on a lot of the tv's, it looks just...well, normal..

I'm surprised by that review- I can instantly tell HDTV from standard deff on my 30" CRT, so either:
1)Time warner compresses the hell out of SD so that it looks really bad and doesn't compress HDTV or
2)They had to compress the HD-DVD's to the point that you can't tell on smaller TV's.
