A robin built a nest in the top of a little old plum tree in my back yard, about eye level. She's sitting on eggs. I was able to creep up fairly close and snap this picture this afternoon. Oh, and here are the eggs, too.

That first pic is great! What'd you take it with? I like the way having the aperture opened up, decreasing the depth of field, made everything else out of focus. Looks neat.

Longer focal lengths also help create a shallow dof...Jason are you still using the Canon? (If I remember correctly) And what lens did you use?

    Canon SLR or D-SLR?

It's been sooo long since I've done anything about photography, I've forgotten everything, it seems. Focal length is the distance between the two sets of lenses in the lense?

    Thanks!

Digital Rebel, 300D, 70-200 F4L @200mm. I wasn't as close as it looks like: This is cropped significantly.

Wow! That's some nice PQ to have cropped it that much! I'm impressed. Of course, seeing as how I'm used to a Canon Powershot A80, I'd be impressed with about anything! :p

Sort of, basically it's the distance between the lens and the sensor or film. It is measured in mm, also called opical zoom. Longer focal lengths or mm will get you closer to a subject. It also magnifies the subject and can compress the background (blurring, etc.). It also can make distances behind the subject look shorter. For example, when (or if) you watch a baseball game, the camera that shows the pitcher is often located all the way out in dead left or right center. The distance between the pitcher and the catcher seems short on tv because of the zooming in of the camera.

Nice. I sometimes think of your swallow photo last year. Any update? Did they take off never to be seen again?

Tour, do you have any bluebells or grapefruit/date trees, depending on just how SE you are. :)
