Broken Ankle

Monday was a beautiful day here in Western PA. All the kids were outside playing and having fun. My eight year old daughter Shannon was with her friends at a neighbor's house. We didn't know they had a trampoline:eek: Shannon has had gymnastics training since she was small and knows how to play on a trampoline and the safefy rules. She someone turned her ankle over, came home crying. Not a lot of swelling or bruising, but she had trouble walking on it. Yesterday we had X-rays done. Today the orthopedic Dr. gave us the bad news; a hairline crack on one of her ankle growth plates. Boot cast for at least three weeks. This will be the end of the soccer season but hopefully she will be able to do her dance recital in June. Here is a picture of Shannon taken last Saturday.

The young heal fast... Folks my age... not so much. Hell, half the time I hurt and don't remember WTF I did to warrant the pain.

I'll throw a word of caution in here, if I may.

A hairline crack will fill in, heal, and the growth plate continues developing.
The child grows with no future affects.
A completely broken growth plate, however, will no longer grow and develop.
In this case, a broken ankle growth plate means your daughter will grow up with one leg shorter than the other.

Have you thought about sending this photo to Hallmark?

Great photo, and ditto on the ice cream. She's in our thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully she won't get too down having to stumble around with a cast for a while.

    That's a great picture, too!

Is your sister-in-law still recovering well from that back surgery?

Thanks for the info mrbluelight. Fortunately, it's just a crack. In fact the orthopedic Dr. was not 100% sure it was a crack. The three week boot cast was a percaution. After three weeks they take another x-ray and get a better look at the bone after the swelling has gone down.

I used to watch Ben Casey growing up too! Did you have one of those Dr. shirts? LOL!

Audiobliss, your a wonderful young man. Thanks for asking about my sister in law. She is doing a better, thanks for asking. She will need to wear the back brace for another six weeks before she can start physical therapy. Actually, the picture you see was taken while we were visiting her down in Washington DC. The big old golden retreiver in the pic (Casey), actually belonged to my my-in-law. After my monther-in-law passed away last Summer, Casey has been staying with friends down in DC. This weekend we got a chance to see him, and I took the picture.

How's your job hunting prospects? If your an Engineer we've got a lot of openings here at Westinghouse. We're looking to hire several hundred engineers over the next year to support our business boom with the resurgence of new nuclear power plants. Let me know!

Aww, Casey. That's a good name for a dog. :)

I hope the physical therapy for your sister-in-law goes smoothly and quickly enough.

I appreciate the heads-up about the job, but do you think Westinghouse would be interested in hiring a senior in high school? :p So far engineering is just one of the possibilities, but it's just as good as the rest (accounting, business, math professor, etc.).

My recommendation is to go for engineering:) I've worked as an engineer for about 30 years. I've done things and gone places that I would have never experienced otherwise. Fewer high school students are going into these tech fields so the demand is going up. Money is not bad either. Most strating jobes for new grads in engineering across the country is $50 - 60K per year.

Hey - as a four time ankle dislocator, get her a balance board. At her age she might even find it a little fun instead of the workout / rehab piece it really is (after the boot comes off). I have not had any problems since I was introduced to mine by my Doctor - and they are relatively cheap compared to chronic ankle injury.

Hope she feels better soon, I know how miserable this can make your day!

Thanks Mr. Buhl! Not a bad idea. I had one of those when I was doing PT after my knee surgery several years ago. They really help strenthen joints that have had trauma.

Are you any relation to the Henry Buhl family of Pittsburgh?

That's too bad about your little one. I hope she recovers quickly. The good thing is that the little ones heal pretty quickly.

I just took my son to get his foot checked last weekend. X-rays were negative, but he is still in some pain. I may take him in again later today. The two broken bones that he has had were both while playing football. I am grateful that this was not his third :).
