I read an article yesterday echoing alot of this. Seems its a mess, again. They talked about HDMI 1.3 being the ticket to high rez, not to mention 1.2 is not even out.

With all the small labels jumping on to SACD it seems it will have some legs for now and into the future. Since I am not much of a videophile and think 480p and 1080i look just fine its going to be years before I consider the next high rez audio format.

whats the point to release HDMI 1.2 when 1.3 is the one everyone needs

HDMI 1.2 is already released and can support pcm. Goto the hdmi website for more info. You really dont need HDMI 1.3 at this time because there probably wont be many disks for a while that have the newer formats. Just look for a reciever that can support multi channel pcm inputs. Also if you go to the dolby website, they seem to think that all of their next gen formats will be decoded by the player(not the receiver) and then output via lpcm.

I think the player should decode the sound anyway. This way they can lower the price of receivers and get the DVD market back up to well over $150. Typically a quality dvd player will sound better than an equal matched receiver.

Yes, the specs for HDMI 1.2 have been released, did it even make it to players as a usable format, I saw a number of "foward thinking" releases, but those can be changed and are not guaranteed, one I remember said 1.2 would support DSD. Admittedly, I am not the best expert for digital formats, I just keep an eye for possible high rez music formats, a skeptical eye at that.

When you think about it, HDMI was released to the public way too early thus creating all this confusion and anticipation. HDMI should have premeired with 1.3 specs, its so apparent manufacturers are out for the big bucks over consumer well being when something isn't complete and is being marketed and sold, reminds of the current batch of "1080p" tvs that don't accept 1080p inputs, like my Sony.
