All those guys would've made the list if they could actually play the drums.

    Had to do it.

I sold my drums when I went into the military in 1976, but I never got rid of my cymbals. About 20 great sounding A and K Zildjans. I held onto them for a long time thinking it was just a matter of time before I bought a house with a basement. Well, I never did, and sold off all those great cymbals about two years ago. I was going to BE the next Buddy Rich, but life got in the way.

I feel your pain bro. Not only is it extremely difficult to find a place to play but they are even more difficult to tear down and set up. And lets not forget the cost! Yeah, I may take up guitar after all!

I absolutely hated flutists. Anybody that could walk around with their instrument in their back pocket just pissed me off.

I was in a band called Fried Chicken. We broke up for awhile and got back together as Re-Fried Chicken. Late 60's we played a job at Staten Island Community College. In a never duplicated feat, on the way home from that job, I fit my entire set of drums, AND my good buddy Jim Shand, in my '67 MG MIDGET!

Jim must have been a skinny guy. How the hell did you get a kit and a friend in an MG, let alone an MG Midget. My Dad had several of those and I barely fit in it as a young'in

A TALL, and skinny guy. Top down, heads removed from all the drums, drums inserted inside each other, and all drums but the bass drum in the trunk without the trunk completely closed. He had the bass drum in his lap, cymbal stands sticking out from everywhere. Gold sparkle Ludwigs with real wood shells babe. Did I mention it was January or February, and a damn good thing it wasn't a long drive back to Brooklyn from Staten Island?

Wow, that must have been a sucky ride home!

The singer of the band I used to play in had a black conversion van, A-Team style. We all chipped in and bought an enclosed trailer for it. We rode in STYLE and COMFORT to our gigs. :D

I was in another band and we called ourselves D.A.P. (Disperse A Party). We'd promise everybody "Oh yeah we do The Stones. Yeah, we do The Animals..." Promise them the world and then show up and play early Mothers of Invention stuff. Best any body ever got from us was Midnight Hour or Louie, Louie. I think we played Carol once too.

And I never had a drum "kit" my man. I had a set of drums, or a drumset. This isn't merry old, I wish it would sink into the ocean England.

Hey! Another guy with some taste!

Tony "Drive Fast Cars, Smoke Big Cigars" Williams and Leon "Ndugu" Chancler.

You got taste, but Tony Williams never played with Weather Report. Ndugu did though. He's on "Mysterious Traveller".

Check your Weather Report collection, my friend and read the credits:
    Weather Report - Mr. Gone
Tony Williams is featured on two tracks, "Mr. Gone," and "Punk Jazz."

I'll have to take your word for it, that's not in my collection. I cut them loose after Heavy Weather and they became stars with "Birdland". "Featured" on a whole two tracks?

I'll stick with his contributions to the later Miles rhythm section with Hancock and Carter.

Why would Tony Williams NOT play with Weather Report? His old partner, Wayne Shorter (co-founder of WR) was also a member of the famous Miles Davis Quintet (1965-68) along with previously mentioned: Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter.

I have all of the albums (and CDs) of Weather Report - Big Fan! Also, Steve Gadd "plays" on the same Mr. Gone album as well. You should pick it up.

the obvious has been stated -

    Neil Peart
    Buddy Rich
    Keith Moon
    John Bonham

A few lesser but unbelieveably talented drummers/percussionists:

Tim "herb" Alexander - crazy syncopated s*#t on Primus - check out
Pork Soda, whatever and you will be amazed (although not necessarily pleased - not for everyone)

Chester Thompson - Wow - played on tour with Genesis, Zappa, Weather Report, you name it. This guy is the underrated studio ****! He crushed Phil in a Duel onstage and say what you want about Collins - The cat can PLAY when he wants to.

Sib Hashian - Boston's drummer - maybe not in league with the others but I have always been partial to the notion that to sound good, is to be good. Some genius' are not the easiest listen.

Ugh, totally forgot about him. How could I? One of my favorite bands, and my cat is named after the band.

On another note -- Les Claypool is probably one of the best bassists ever just because of his completely unique stylings. I'd rank him up there with Victor Wooten.

A+++ To that Les is a maniac on the bass - inventive in style, sound, and method... you get the feeling he REEALLY has nothing better to do that come up with funk on the bass!

Neil P has to be on any list for rock. Mick Fleetwood is pretty overlooked but he can pound some sound. Can't argue with Bonham.

    What a subjective list...
    No order.

Ed Shaughnessy. Tonight Show Band with J. Carson, man could play with the best of em.

    Buddy Rich.

    Always like T. Bozzio.

Keith Moon for his style was second to none.

Liberty Devitto is right on time.

    Jim Keltner, plays for Everyone.

    Nigel Olssen-E, John Drummer.

    Just so many good ones.

I had a set of Remo's that was a portable set, No bottom heads, folded into each other and I had them all into a 24 inch case. My stands and Sabians separate but fairly compact compared to hauling my Ludwig Vista Lite Clear set around.
