I just picked up the Word of Mouth Revisited CD (Jaco Pastorius Big Band). It's a tribute album, which would typically mean that somebody took one of my favorites and effed it up...but this one is really good. Especially if it's electric bass and drums that you are looking for.

Honestly, Birds of Fire hasn't been getting a lot of play lately. I like the RTF disc a lot more at this point, and between that and the new Tool CD I haven't been listening to much else. I've spun BoF and my Cobham disc a couple of times, but they don't immediately grab my interest like the RTF disc does. I think it will take more time for them to grow on me...which usually means I can listen to them for much longer before losing interest.

In the meantime I'm jamming to Chick's distortion-laden solo on "Theme to the Mothership".

Nice... It is sad when "artists" opt for success. Bonnie Raitt is my case in point.

While everyone was going on and on about "Luck of the Draw", the real Bonnie was disappearing before my very ears with each successive track...

I'm one of those "on and on" guys....IMO "Luck of the Draw" IS her best work. And my preferred Benson discs are all post "Breezin'" and "In Flight".

I'm not much of a jazz fan. Other than some early Spyro Gyra, Stanley Jordan, Stanley Clark, Flim and the BBs and some Benson I don't have much jazz in my music library. There may be some Retun to Forever, Weather Report, Yellowjackets and Mahavishnu Orchestra (not really jazz...?) scattered in but not much. Given that, I've not much to add so I'll bow out.

    Give that man a Marlboro.

Zappa threw Lowell out of the early Mothers cause he was always grogged up. The bass player, Roy Estrada, was one of the original Mothers. He also did a lot of good work for Captain Beefheart.

Northbound on Monday, southbound last night. We stopped at one of the rest stops to get some Cinnabon's at 8:15pm, they were effing closed! Really pissed me off.

As I posted earlier, I HIGHLY recommend Benson's White Rabbit as a great pre-Breezin album although I admit I wore the grooves out of both Breezin and In Flight during college. I have played all three to my 21 yr old and he likes White Rabbit hands down.

As usual, however I also agree with George Grand on Bad Benson, very good album although I never bought it (may have to reconsider now though  ).

I was chatting with TNRabbit today before I went to Manifest on my weekly CD/SACD run and he had recommended to check out the Yellowjackets. I am listening to "The Best of the Yellowjackets" right now. Cool stuff.

I haven't made it to "Clair's song" yet, which is the song that he specifically wanted me to check out, but so far it's been real smooth, tight jazz. The first song, "New Rochelle" is/was an instant liking by me and pretty much set the mood for the rest of the album. Well recorded to boot. Sweet.

Listened to it again at concert/live levels and Damn! At exactly 54 seconds into song # 3, the hit is so strong that the slam would make you think that your speakers are going to blow. Then the song continues on....

    Nice recording...

I would also say if you like incredible bass playing, check out Victor Wooten on the Bela Fleck & the Flecktones "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo"....stupendous bassmanship! Victor is a bass GOD.

I was listening to my cable jazz channel on TWC - and my ears perked up and my foot did an uncontrollable tap to:
Jeff Golub's "Wanna Funk" from Out of the Blue

I'm gonna pick this up myself.
