I just picked up an open box item from Best Buy. The remote was missing and the top of the unit is pretty scratched up but for $299 I couldn't really resist. Really wonderful video and sound so far. :D I'm really enjoying building my HT a piece at a time.

Yeah, it's a DVD, CD, SACD player. I just bought the Miles Davis SACD to test and man it is better than I imagined. I know why everyone here talks about it now. It looks pretty darn cool too. Now I just need a 5 channel earthquake amp, svs sub, and lsi fx surrounds to complete my system. :D

Man, doesn't that thing usually go for a lot closer to $1,000? And you got it for $300?! Sweet!

Ok, so my friend convinced me to audition a Denon 3910 this weekend along with the 999es. I gotta say the Denon is quite the amazing machine. I still need to learn how to calibrate both machines to compare apples to apples, but right now the sony video is not nearly as good as the Denon.

It shouldn't be as the video section is much better in the Denon....always has been.

Yeah, the high-end Denon players are amazing. I auditioned my 3800 against Rotel and NAD units, and it beat them both in sound and video. But you got a great deal on that Sony, I wouldn't be complaining :)

    Hey Dorokusai,

Thanks a bunch for the link to Sony replacement parts. That was really nice. I'm just torn about keeping the sony vs. the denon. I actually really like the appearance of the Sony.

Muso - No problem. I demo'd the 999ES when building my HT, but video quality was more important to me. The Denon, at that time, was almost impossible to beat, so I couldn't justify the Sony....although it would have went very nicely with my previous ES AVR.

    Just curious....

I have the DVP-9000ES, how does the video section compare to the Dennon and 999ES players?

I am not going to replace it until a nice HD player is available.

I know as far as the build quality goes there is no comparison the 9000 wins hands down.

I still own both the 9000ES DVD player and Denon 3910. The 9000ES video performance was excellent when it first came out a few years ago, but in comparison to the 3910 and previous 2900, color rendition is not as good, grey scale rendition is not as good, overall detail is far better with the Denons, layer changes are faster with the Denons. In addition, the 3910 offers HDMI and DVI output. I still think the best video performance over component video from Denon in this price range came from the 2900 with its silicon image processor.

I've kept the 9000ES because of its SACD audio performance and it also makes an excellent transport for CD's into an external DAC. Video is still very good from it, but it's video quality can be surpassed with a $100 DVD player now. There's no need to replace it if waiting for one of the high definition formats though.

Having played Lord of the Rings, Matrix, and other movies side by side, the Denon has a much cleaner image. There is less haloing effect in the shadow areas and I have yet to see artifacting from the Denon. This weekend I'll hopefully be able to see a picture from the HD-A1 my friend purchased to compare.
