dayton or Ascendant compare to Polk

Im thinking of building 2 new inclosers. My Hafler DH-200 will be the amp. My question is, should I build one of the new inclosers with my current Polk 10" sub that is coming out of the PSW10 or should I consider replacing with another? Maybe Dayton or Ascendant. The other incloser will be the either the Dayton or the Ascendant to replace the MTX sw2. I was just wondering since I dont have the specs on the Polk woofer itself. I do know both Dayton and Ascendant have much bigger magnets and can handle much higher wattage. But I dont know how the quality or sound quality of Polk subs compared to these 2 other manufactures.

Bothe boxes will be conciderably larger. the 12" will be 4.2 cu ft, and the 10" will be 3.5 cu ft. So the air space will increase considerably.

Are you talking sealed or ported? These box sizes would be on the large size if sealed is your preference.

Without having the T/S parameters for the Polk driver, you'd be in risky territory building a new, DIFFERENT, enclosure. The driver might perform fine in different alignments - Polk chose the one it did to meet whatever design criteria were in place. But again, without the specs.... You could measure or have the specs measured if you really wanted to. My gut reaction is don't bother.

If you check out the Parts Express forum, you'll find a lot of information on the Dayton drivers and different enclosures people have used. There are a LOT of speaker-building sites on the web - a lot of information out there. I bet you could find several successful designs for whatever driver you select.

You'd probably be better off with a better driver. There are many good choices of driver out there that should outperform the stock Polk driver. If you are going to design the new sub yourself why not improve on it in every way possible.
If you aren't aware of it here is a great resource with lots of info on building your own sub.

I am a member of www.diyaudio.com But I wanted to ask here since this is a Polk forum.

Polk does not have the t\s specs for this driver. So I was wondering if anyone had any experience modding out the cabinet for a Polk sub driver.

Both Dayton (partsexpess) and Ascendant audio have specs, but if the Polk would perform well under different condition, I wont need to purchase a driver.

I guess I'll just build the cabinet and try the Polk out to see. Even to know what wattage it could handle would be alittle helpfull. But if it distorts with the Hafler in the new cabinet, I guess that would tell me alot.

It will be one of those "try and see" type of situations.

The dayton or AA drivers will far outclass the polk driver. The Polk driver was likely designed to be in the polk box and paired with the polk amp because they likely have some EQ running through it somewhere. I don't think it would be worth the effort. Sell the Polk sub to fund the DIY sub, it will be worth it.
